Introducing: The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph In Platinum (With A Platinum Bracelet Too!)
January 14, 2018
Last year was a major anniversary for the Royal Oak Chronograph C it turned 20. So, naturally it was a major focus for the brand, and there were a number of new introductions to replace a lineup that had been on offer since 2012. The new Royal Oak Chronograph that came out in 2017 featured a size bump from 39mm to 41mm and a rejiggering of the of the chronograph sub-dials, including a slight adjustment of the position of the date window. While this year isn't quite as loaded with new Royal Oak Chronographs C there are just two C we wanted to draw your attention to this guy here: an all-platinum Royal Oak Chronograph with a beautiful smokey black-grey Tapisserie dial. All Platinum Chronograph, Take Two This isn't the first time Audemars Piguet has taken a familiar chronograph and rendered it in 100% platinum. Last year, at SIHH 2017, AP snuck an all platinum model of the Offshore Chronograph into that collection's revamp. Wearing this watch would alleviate any need to go to the gym.You can see that watch (along with the other 2017 Offshores) right here. Why This Watch Matters Last year's lineup of Royal Oak Chronographs gave us a bunch of different exectutions. There was an all-titanium version, steel bracelet versions, gold with strap options, and finally there were all gold with bracelet versions, which formed the top tier of the price pyramid. Now we have an all-platinum Royal Oak Chronograph. This is the new king of the hill among Royal Oak Chronographs, and it's been outfitted with one of the cooler dial designs we've seen from AP in the last few years, a fum-style interpretation of the Royal Oak's signature Tapisserie pattern. Initial Thoughts My first thought on hearing about this watch was that I had to hold it and feel its weight. There really aren't many all-platinum watches out there today, and I think it's for a couple of reasons. They're expensive, and they weigh oh-so-much. But if you're in the market for the most expensive Royal Oak Chronograph in any metal, the first concern probably isn't going to cross your mind for very long. As they say, this is a lot of watch.
