Bulgari Octo Finissimo With "Tuscan Copper" Dial

March 17, 2023

Bulgari is back with another tweak to its famous Octo Finissimo. This time the brand behind ultra-thin record makers and breakers releases a new Octo featuring a "Tuscan Copper" colored dial, which is a sunray-finished metallic dial in a warm hue. According to Bulgari, the color of the dial is inspired by "the supernatural light present in the paintings of an Italian artist of the 16th century Florentine school."? Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Executive Director of Product Creation, cited the Mannerism movement (which saw a movement away from naturalistic realism towards a more expressive way of painting) and the work of Jacopo da Pontormo. "The Octo Finissimo opens an almost limitless universe of creation," he said in the press release. "Its design is both so geometric and rigorous, and at the same time so versatile that we can play with a multitude of personalities. Associated with color, it can express ideas, emotions or abstract concepts." The color is a soft metallic take on the ever-popular salmon color seen across brands. It has been used in Bulgari watchmaking only once before in a much brighter Perpetual Calendar. This take on salmon is much more subtle and stands in contrast to the cool tones of the steel case and bracelet.? Copper aside, not much has changed with the Octo. Still very thin (6.4mm) and slightly wide (40mm) with a very thin manufacture movement ticking away inside. There's a stainless steel screw-down crown and transparent caseback so you can see what that movement is up to. The watch is limited to North America and there will only be 50 pieces available at $13,300.? What We Think There's only so much one can say about a dial update on a watch that remains largely unchanged. BUT I will say this; this looks nice. And I will say this as well, I would like to see it in person. It is hard to tell just where on the salmon scale (a scientific, official, nothing to do with actual fish scale) this dial falls and given the artistic inspiration, I think it warrants a closer look than most.? Dancing in the dappled sunlight aside, I do think it will be interesting to see how, if at all, this dial color changes how the Octo wears on the wrist. It's no secret that in order to be that thin, the watch has to be wide and I think different metals and color combos make some versions of the watch read as heavier or bigger than others and I truly can't hypothesize as to which way this one will go. I will give Bulgari kudos for doing the salmon thing on their own terms, offering up a slightly different take on the color and tying it back to the Italian heritage of the brand.?
