Arnaud Chastaingt, director of Chanel's watchmaking creation studio, set out to channel the pulsing club vibe of the '90s electronic music scene (driven by acts like Technotronic) and developed the neon theme across Chanel's watch pillars C from J12 and Premire to Code Coco. "In the nineties, this musical movement created a radical new visual universe, which could be described as eccentric, a reflection of nightlife and its atmosphere," Chastaingt said in a video introducing the new models. "Electronic music transcended the frontiers of music and created an aesthetic culture." Even if rainbow brights are not your thing, you're still invited to the party with a handful of decadent monochromatic Boy.Friend Skeletons and Mademoiselle Priv pieces that are anything but wallflowers. Initial Thoughts Electro J12 Electro We've seen rainbows before, but pairing them against the intense black or bright white ceramic of Chanel's flagship J12 really makes the colors pop. For starters, the J12 Electro proves that you don't need rainbow sparklers to get into the mood. The limited edition of 1,255 pieces powered by an automatic movement kicks off the Electro series in a highly scratch-resistant black ceramic and steel case, with neon-colored indicators on the unidirectional rotating bezel and black lacquer dial. J12 Electro Dream in black J12 Electro Dream in white Admittedly, adding shimmering baguette-cut rainbow sapphires on the J12 Electro Dream really dials up the volume in black ceramic and steel, or white ceramic and 18K white gold. Limited to 55 pieces each, this high-voltage duo's bezels cover the whole spectrum with 46 perfectly matched colored sapphires seamlessly progressing from one shade to the next, ombr style. A single baguette in each of the 12 main colors serves as an hour marker on the dial, and a clear sapphire caseback reveals the house's COSC-certified automatic Caliber 12.1, outfitted in black for the occasion. J12 X-Ray Electro Caliber 3.1 Meanwhile, the J12 X-Ray Electro Caliber 3.1 wants to make a few things clear. This limited edition of 12 numbered pieces applies the same rainbow sapphire bezel and dial treatment but with a clear sapphire dial, in addition to a sapphire and 18K white gold case and bracelet. The transparent manual-winding Caliber 3.1 in-house movement has a sapphire minute counter bridge, baseplate, and cogwheel bridge. J12 Electro Box And just because, why not, Chanel assembled a unique boxed set of 12 matte black ceramic one-of-a-kind, single-color J12 Electros with each shade numbered a different "cut" like a DJ's playlist. Each steel fixed bezel with black ADLC treatment is set with 46 baguette-cut monochrome sapphires C just choose the shade that meets your mood each day. 12 Electro Star And it wouldn't be Chanel without a mega-watt high-jewelry piece that's all ice on the surface, with rainbow-colored baguette sapphires streaming across the sides. The 12 Electro Star, limited to 12 numbered pieces, has more than enough star power to outshine a disco ball. Premire Electro When it came to the Premire line, neon-colored leather takes the place of gems interwoven through the brand's signature chain in steel treated with black ADLC. The star is the triple-row limited edition of 555 pieces that covers all the colors in one piece. And since Premire collectors deserve their own set, there are five limited-edition boxes, each containing seven monochromatic triple-strand Electro Premires in neon pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, or red C with matching Chanel logos on the black lacquer dials. Code Coco Electro The Code Coco Electro watch, a limited edition of 255 pieces, comes as an exhilarating shock in neon pink quilted calfskin leather with black trim and lining. The distinctive cuff watch design is modeled on the iconic 2.55 handbag with its toggle-style locking clasp. The central case is divided into two black lacquered squares C one for the dial and the other set with a single princess-cut diamond. Boy.Friend Skeleton X-Ray A pair of airy Boy.Friend Skeletons fully reveal their Caliber 3 manual-winding mechanisms, beautifully pared down and composed in a series of interlocking circles between panes of sapphire crystal. The 18K Beige Gold version, limited to 55 pieces, frames the mechanical masterpiece with 38 baguette-cut diamonds, while the X-Ray, limited to 100 pieces, goes for maximum transparency with a sapphire case and bezel. Mademoiselle Priv Bouton Mademoiselle Priv Bouton Dcor Camlia Nacre Finally, in a glorious nod to Chanel's haute-couture essence, the Mademoiselle Priv Bouton Dcor Camlia secret watch alludes to a fancy button with its yellow gold centerpiece, adorned with the house's signature camellia motif in sculpted mother-of-pearl, with diamonds front and center. The precious button, which opens to reveal a watch dial glittering with diamonds, is mounted on a quilted mordor leather cuff trimmed in golden calfskin for a soft touch.
