Introducing: The Girard-Perregaux Neo-Tourbillon With Three Bridges Skeleton
January 11, 2018
The Neo-Tourbillon is one of the pillars of the current Girard-Perregaux collections. First released back in 2014, the Neo-Tourbillon with Three Bridges was an extension of the 150-year old Three Bridges, a signature for the brand. Now the watch has been reintroduced in a skeletonized version. The watch itself is made of titanium and measures 45mm in diameter and 15.85mm thick. The caliber is the automatic (with white gold micro-rotor!) GP09400-001, which is the same caliber as the original Neo-Tourbillon, just skeletonized. Girard-Perregaux has been producing the tourbillon with three golden bridges since 1884 and skeletonized versions of the movement since 1998. This is a way for them to marry both techniques in an interesting way.? A Little Context The three golden bridges are a crucial part of Girard-Perregaux's history, going all the way back to the mid-nineteenth century. Just last week, Jack took an in-depth look at an incredible pocket watch featuring the signature architecture taken to its most superlative extreme.Check out the full story here. Why This Watch Matters The world might not actually need another skeletonized tourbillon, but in the context of Girard-Perregaux's history this watch is definitely meaningful. As Jack discussed in-depth, the tourbillon with three bridges is crucial to the very fabric of Girard-Perregaux's existence. This watch is a good example of the manufacturer re-purposing a movement type that is near and dear to them in a modern way, making the concept relevant to a new crop of collectors. Initial Thoughts Being honest, this watch isn't for me. I just can't get on board with a skeletonized tourbillon in a 45mm titanium case. However, that doesn't mean someone else out there won't love this watch and everything it represents historically. It is genuinely refreshing for a historic brand such as Girard-Perregaux to keep building on their heritage in new and forward-looking ways.
