Introducing: The Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition
January 30, 2018
This is a large watch, and it features a complex mechanism called a "drift-angle calculator," which Hamilton says pilots can use to calculate crosswinds. But for most of this watch's potential owners, the real appeal will come from the tool-watch aesthetic and the robust Valjoux 7750 chronograph that's been modified specifically for Hamilton in meaningful ways. Why This Watch Matters The H-21 Si movement at the heart of this watch is a modified version of the ETA Valjoux 7750. Hamilton partnered with its fellow Swatch Group subsidiary to make this movement. This souped-up chronograph has been enhanced with a silicon hairspring, making it the first 7750 supplied by ETA, to be so equipped. (The German brand Damasko has also fitted silicon hairsprings into chronographs using this caliber.) What does this mean in practical terms? The watch is less prone to the effects of magnetism and should, in theory, deliver more or less the same level of performance five years down the line as it did when it was first strapped on.? Initial Thoughts I have a soft spot for Hamilton. My first Swiss-made mechanical watch was a Khaki chronograph. Hamilton's long been a go-to brand for solid mechanical watches with attractive pricing, and it remains so. It's impressive to see Hamilton, a brand usually associated with value first, innovating by using the first-ever ETA Valjoux 7750 equipped with a silicon hairspring.
