Introducing: The Herms Slim d'Herms GMT (Live Pics & Pricing)
March 15, 2018
For its latest limited edition offering, Herms has introduced a new take on the Slim d'Herms with a prominent GMT complication. Overall, the layout of the grey dial within the slim palladium case will feel very familiar. However, where you'll usually find a running seconds sub-dial there is a date display, and up at 10 o'clock is a large silvered sub-dial for the GMT function. Here there is what looks like a jumble of numerals, but they're actually all arranged to make reading the second timezone (home time) easy. Capping things off, you've got two day/night windows, one for home time and one for local time. Like I said, this watch is every bit as practical as it is fun. Why This Watch Matters Since it debuted in 2015, the Slim d'Herms has become a modern cult classic. Traditional luxury enthusiasts love it for its pedigree, design nerds love it for the custom Philippe Apeloig numerals, and the horologically-inclined love it for the awesome, ultra-thin micro-rotor movement. There's a lot to love for sure. Last year we got the addition of a perpetual calendar to the range, so the addition of a GMT to the collection starts to round out the mostly time-only offerings. It will be interesting to see how Herms grows the collection from here, both expanding on the GMT model (this one is limited to just 90 pieces) and adding other complications/executions.? On the wrist, the 39.5mm case wears like a dream. Initial Thoughts Herms is a luxury house unlike any other. It's products are all of superlative quality and exhibit great thoughtfulness in design, but all without taking themselves too seriously. That last part is major. I never get the feeling when looking at an Herms creation that I'm meant to stick my nose in the air or swirl a glass of Grand Cru?C I'm supposed to smile and to enjoy it. The Slim d'Herms GMT is another perfect example of this. The watch is both practical and fun, and little touches like the palladium case and the varying dial finishes add tons of interest. Also, that Philippe Apeloig typography is just too good to ignore. While the GMT dial's numerals might look like a jumble, they make it easy to read the second timezone accurately and quickly.
