Higsnobiety has teamed up with beloved Italian microbrand Unimatic on a new trio of limited edition Mickey Mouse watches in collaboration with Disney C all in time for Disney's 100th anniversary. The ?capsule collection showcases three styles. Included in the range are the 1929 Mickey U3-HS (40mm in diameter), the 1947 Mickey U2S-T-HS (38mm), and the 2023 Mickey U1S-HS2 (40mm) Unimatic models, crafted from either titanium or stainless steel. Modello Uno U1S-HS2 "Diver" Modello Due U2S-T-HS "Field watch" Each watch features a Mickey Mouse illustration on the dial, with each design from a different Mickey Mouse design era, and are engraved with its series number on the caseback. ?The 2023 Mickey U1S-HS2 ?and 1947 Mickey U2S-T-HS come equipped with the Automatic Caliber Sellita SW200-1 b which provides hour, minutes and seconds functions. The 1929 Mickey U3-HS, the chronograph diver, is equipped with a Meca-quartz movement (Seiko VK64A). All three watches are 300m water resistant. Each model comes with a choice of two straps in either red, gray, or black, all presented in custom packaging.? What We Think I imagine that most horological enthusiasts would picture a Mickey Mouse dial if they were asked to conjure up an image of a character watch. And for good reason. We know that the Gerald Genta brand has been featuring Mickey on its dials since 1984. But the character watch trend actually began with Ingersoll. They launched a Mickey Mouse watch back in 1933. Unimatic typically makes very straightforward tool watch designs that harken back to watches of old, but with small, very understated modern twists. Unlike the previous very overstated Southpark and SpongeBob collaborations we have seen from the brand, Mickey Mouse verges on a more historical interpretation of character watch design. It's a little more classic as an idea and a lot more subtle as a design. But let's hold the skepticism for a moment and think about why so many watch lovers have a soft spot for Mickey. I speak as somebody who doesn't really enjoy character watches all that much, but a Disney character watch hits different. Yes Mickey Mouse is perfect pop design, but he is also just warm and fuzzy. I hate to sound so trite, but sometimes it's okay to like things that are so universally recognized and loved. Even if they do make you feel like you belong to a deeply capitalist society that has rid you of your own brain and thoughts and opinions, causing you to cling on to symbols of childhood, and in turn buy products with said symbols to perpetuate some feeling of comfort and nostalgia. It's okay to be a fully adjusted adult who likes cartoons. And if you're doing a character watch you might as well go classic with Mickey Mouse. And all for a pretty affordable price too.
