You had to know this one was coming sooner or later. The Grey NATO officially became a HODINKEE podcast two months ago, but it was always the product of two important HODINKEE contributors, editor-at-large Jason Heaton and senior writer James Stacey. We knew from the very beginning that getting these two guys on HODINKEE Radio to talk about why we all decided to make The Grey NATO part of the HODINKEE family was a no-brainer, but this conversation ended up being about much more than podcasts and adventure watches.I've been lucky enough to know Jason since I first started at HODINKEE, some six-and-a-half years ago. He's currently the longest serving contributor to the website (other than Ben, of course) and both his voice and his ambitious story ideas have had a huge impact on who we are and how we approach our editorial mission. James, on the other hand, looked like he was going to be my white whale, if you'll excuse the clumsy analogy. I first met James in 2013 and have been trying to get him to write for HODINKEE since sometime around an hour after we met. The guy is super smart, has a great perspective, and does incredible work C what wasn't to like. It only took me around four years to talk him into it and now he's become a vital part of our team.? We were able to squeeze in an hour in the studio just a day before the HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Weekend kicked off, and there's definitely a healthy dose of nostalgia and reminiscing in the episode. You'll get some insight into our team, how we work, and the ways in which we challenge each other to constantly strive to be the best we can be. I'm fortunate to get to speak with these two guys on a regular basis, but getting to do so with no distractions and knowing that we'd get to share the conversation with all of you definitely made this one special. We hope you enjoy Episode 24 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below and let us know what you think in the comments. Be sure to subscribe to The Grey NATO too if you don't already.? Wrist Check While James is often wearing something for a review or a story he's working on, if he's wearing something of his own you're most likely going to spot this on his wrist. This ref. 16570 Rolex Explorer II is kind of the perfect watch for James. The so-called "Polar" Explorer, it's the rare white-dial Rolex sports watch and it's all about no-nonsense functionality. James travels a ton for his work, and knowing what time it is back home is crucial. The fact that it looks damn good is an added bonus. The Explorer is usually mounted on a grey NATO strap, of course. To say that Jason is known as a "Doxa guy" would be an understatement. Few people have done more to advance the case for these charming, well-made, purpose-built watches than Jason, and the fact that he chose to wear one for the H10 weekend is no surprise. This particular Doxa is a SUB 200 T-Graph Sharkhunter dive chronograph that was originally sold in 1970 (Jason's birth year) to a teenager in a Chicago dive shop, who bought it on layaway. He lovingly wore the watch many years, including during his dive training in the lakes and quarries of Wisconsin (where Jason grew up). This original owner found Jason via his Doxa T-Graph story right here from a couple of years back and Jason ended up buying the watch from him. Watch stories don't get much better than that.
