It's hard to believe that the 2019 SIHH started a full week ago and that I've already been back from Geneva for a few days. My head is still spinning from all the new watches and we're far from done with coverage of the show. That coverage will include plenty of hands-on looks at watches and thoughts on the state of the industry, not to mention conversations with the likes of Audemars Piguet CEO Fran?ois-Henry Bennahmias and IWC CEO Chris Grainger right here on HODINKEE Radio. But this week, we have something very special for you that has absolutely nothing to do with the SIHH. Not even a little bit.Just a few hours after my flight landed at Newark from Geneva last Thursday, Gagosian Gallery on West 21st Street in New York City opened the first major exhibition of designer Marc Newson's work in over a decade. There are two-tone curved glass chairs crafted in the Czech Republic, massive pieces of furniture covered in cloisson enamel, and even a few perfectly sculpted surf boards. For a design geek like me, it doesnt get much better than this. Marc was kind enough to meet up with me at Gagosian Gallery the next day to talk about the show and how his career has developed over the last 10-or-so years. We also talked about his 30-plus-year history of making timepieces from Ikepod to Atmos to Apple and he even shared why he thinks there are more interesting ideas in the watch world than ever. Marc's insightful but casual nature is really disarming and his perspective on what it means to be a designer today is thought-provoking. We hope you enjoy Episode 27 of HODINKEE Radio. I mean, as part of the design team responsible for the Watch and its accessories, he kind of has to wear one, right? One thing that did surprise me, however, was seeing Marc wearing his Watch on a fauve leather Herms strap instead of one of the silicone Sport Bands based on the design he created way back with his very first watch, the Pod, in the 1980s. While this is his daily-wearer, Marc does still love mechanical watches and continues to wear them from time to time.
