It's still New Watch Season (TM) here at HODINKEE, and I'll admit it's extra exciting to see the new releases as that Netflix-on-the-couch lifestyle starts to get a little boring. While the focus last week was all on Watches & Wonders 2020, this week, I called Cole and James to talk about some of the releases from independent brands, specifically those making the kinds of cult-classic tool watches that set the forums ablaze. Think Doxa, Sinn, G-Shock, and the like. Oh, and we also talk about the new F.P. Journe, because why not!? On top of that, we dive into Cole's recent series of Retailer Spotlight stories and what it's like to be talking to people on that side of the watch industry at a time like this. Finally, we've got a preview of a yet-to-run story about vintage watch advertisements that I'm personally really excited about.? The centerpiece of this week's episode, though, is a conversation between Ben and collector Edmond Saran. Splitting his time between Zrich and New York, Saran is a connoisseur in the truest sense. He's someone who's spent decades honing his taste, settling on a love of the most beautiful cars, watches, and other artifacts of the 1950s and '60s. If the name sounds familiar, it's because you might know Saran from his blog and Instagram account Le Monde Edmond. He and Ben talk about the rise of vintage Rolex, including the pieces outside the usual sport models, how Edmond got into vintage watch collecting in the first place, and the push and pull between being an enthusiast and trying to provide perspective for others.
