After two weeks off, we're back at it!?And I promise your patience will be rewarded. We're back with the latest HODINKEE Radio Fantasy Draft, and this time it's all about summer watches. If you're anything like me, your watch wardrobe does end up being a bit seasonal, with dressier pieces on leather straps getting more wrist time when it's sweater weather and those chunkier watches on NATOs seeing more sun when the mercury rises. I was able to get Cara, James, and Jon into the virtual studio with the mission of each of us emerging with our ideal summer watch collection. We decided to structure this draft a little differently. We created a pre-approved list of watches, with the pieces divided into five "price" categories, based on their actual, real-world prices. These are $5 watches ($10,000+), $4 ($5,000-10,000), $3 ($1,000-5,000), $2 ($500-1,000), $1 (>$500). Each collector has $15 to spend and must end up with five total watches. How each person chooses to spend his or her money though is totally up to them. We did decide to put a few restrictions on what qualifies as a "summer watch," though: The watches have to be at least 100m water resistant. These are summer watches C if you get pushed in a pool or want to take an impromptu run into the ocean, you can't be worried about your watch. No leather straps. The watch must be sold on a nylon or other non-leather strap, or, even better, on a bracelet. We don't need any sweaty, stinky wrists up in here. You have to actually be able to buy this watch. That means no Rolex Daytona, no Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo," and no ref. 5711 Nautilus. If you can't buy it, you can't draft it. As usual, each collection ended up pretty perfectly encapsulating the collector who drafted it. Some are a bit more classic, some a bit more eclectic. Some are bright and colorful, some more sober and low-key. The most important thing though is that you get to vote on the winning collection. You have until July 1 to vote in the poll below (and we've included a recap of each collection for good measure). May the best collection win! We hope you enjoy Episode 93 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below, let us know what you think in the comments, and be sure to vote for your favorite collection!
