Sunday Rewind: How The Speedmaster Became The Moonwatch

January 03, 2021

The Omega Speedmaster may exemplify the greatest second act in the history of watches. Having originally been designed as a racing-chronograph, the watch would later find its true calling on the wrist of NASA astronauts as America developed a daring plan to be the first nation to put men on the Moon. And, while most of you already know that the Speedmaster is "the moon watch," there is a lot more to the story, and it always helps to hear the history from the men who made it happen.? Originally published back in May of 2015, this is a trip report from HODINKEE alum Blake Buettner as he got a chance to visit NASA's operations in Houston, Texas, and even listen to a presentation and Q&A with astronauts Jim Lovell and Tom Stafford. If you like Speedys and consider yourself something of an armchair Apollo crew member, this one certainly has the goods.?Click here to read: "Historical Perspectives: Revisiting The History Of The Omega Speedmaster With The Astronauts Who Wore Them."
