Introducing: The Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Red Magic

January 21, 2020

Today, out of LVMH Watch Week in Dubai, we have a new addition to the Big Bang MP-11 lineup from Hublot. To date, we've seen the HUB9011 14-day movement cased up in sapphire crystal, 3D Carbon, and King Gold. The latest model is a 100-piece limited edition in ceramic. And while ceramic watches are hardly anything new, ceramic in bright colors like the one we see here are actually quite rare. Hublot debuted its first high-tech ceramic timepiece in red back in 2018. At the time, it was the first high-tech ceramic watch to be made in a color other than black or white. The Big Bang MP-11 Red Magic's HUB9011 movement has 14 days of power reserve thanks to seven series-coupled barrels arranged horizontally, just below the display for the time. Their front and center in the photo above, beneath an undulation in the sapphire crystal.?One can read how many days are left in the reserve on a display at the far left end of the series-coupled barrels.?The irregularly shaped sapphire crystal isn't unheard of nowadays, but it is still pretty unusual. Transmitting energy from the horizontally aligned barrel arbor to the vertical gears controlling the hour and minute display necessitated the use of a 90 degree helical worm gear, which is visible at the 10 o'clock position. The ?balance wheel can be seen on the other side of the dial, at 2 o'clock.? Initial Thoughts In the vein of watches like the La Ferrari and the Big Bang Tourbillon Power Reserve 5 Days Sapphire, this is the kind of watch that I most associate with Hublot as a brand. With its 45mm bright red ceramic Big Bang case and its 14-day movement, the Big Bang MP-11 Red Magic is a watch that leans in without making any apologies. It isn't trying to be subtle or coy. Forget sliding it under your shirtsleeve; it won't fit. Its in-your-face demand is to be noticed. At $86,000, it costs more than the already extant carbon fiber version ($82,000) but less than the sapphire cased version ($105,000) and both King Gold versions ($89,500 with 3D Carbon bezel and $148,000 set with diamonds).?It's not for everyone, but Hublot knows its customer base and these watches will sell.
