Review of the Sinn and Revolution Bright Star Chronograph
March 18, 2024
Back in 2019, Revolution teamed up with Sinn for the Dark Star, a cool and relatively faithful take on old pilot's chronographs, with yellow lume, steel case, and classic bezel. Now the pair are back with the new C somewhat paradoxically named C Bright Star. Available today in 300 pieces C twice as many as the Dark Star C for $3,600, the Bright Star has a lot going for it. First off, you'll see this new watch is much more monochromatic. The 43mm stainless steel case is finished in Sinn's proprietary TEGIMENT Technology, a form of surface hardening that increases the hardness (and scratch resistance) to five times the hardness of standard stainless steel. The TEGIMENT-treated steel is coated with a PVD black coating, which works particularly well (both practically and aesthetically) because, in most cases, stress to stainless steel can result in cracking, peeling, or flaking. The bezel, pushers, and crown are also treated similarly. The new release is a purpose-built pilot's chronograph with a bi-directional bezel, a chronograph (powered by a Sellita SW510) with a 30-minute counter, stark, legible hands, and dial indices with Super-LumiNova. And giving the watch its name, there's a bright, luminous star on the dial (appropriate for Revolution's branding). The watch has a sapphire crystal and comes on a bund strap, with an extra NATO included. What We Think I got to take a sneak peek at the new Sinn 155 S Bright Star TEGIMENT and, unsurprisingly to anyone who knows how much of a soft spot I have for black-cased watches, it certainly caught my eye. As a number of people passed the watch around, it seemed like I wasn't alone in appreciating the new TEGIMENT-treated case and sapphire which is a first in the history of the model, as well as the first fully blacked-out 155 made. Revolution is on a coating kick, it seems, with their recent Unimatic release catching my eye (though it's a much louder blue ceramic). At 43mm, this is certainly a bigger watch, but with 100m of water resistance and a big, legible dial, it should transition well from air to see (though hopefully you never have to do that too quickly) as a purpose-built tool.
