Introducing: The Ressence Type 5 L Diver With Luminous Dial (Live Pics)

June 27, 2024

Today, Ressence has released a new version of their Type 5 C the Type 5 L C and it's bold, bright, and extra eye-catching. But you'd be a bit surprised to hear that if you hadn't seen the image above and instead just saw the wrist shot below. Well, you'd also be excused for not realizing it C but that's kind of the point. The new Type 5 L looks straightforward, solid, and like a quintessential Ressence in grey, but it has a hidden secret: a lot of lume.? Close up, you can see the two main tones of grey on the dial. Powered by the automatic-winding ROCS 5 (Ressence Orbital Convex System) module driven by the minute axle of a customized 2824/2 caliber, the dial shows hours, minutes, and a running 90-second display, plus the oil temperature, with touches of yellow and blue to accent the display. The watch has 36 hours of power reserve. The large minute hand rotates around while a smaller hour subdial shows its own hour section. The oil-filled upper chamber of the display cancels out light refraction and makes the watch readable from any angle, providing a clear and crisp display. That's even better for the luminous trick up its sleeve and the fact that it's technically a dive watch. From the side, you can see the legibility of the dial (and the cool impact of the green-hued lume) plus the unidirectional dive bezel (also lumed), and the lock/setup system that allows you to use the back-set lock and wind system. The case is grade-5 titanium, measuring 46mm x 15.5mm with 100m of water resistance. The new Type 5 L is available today for CHF 34,500. Photo: courtesy Ressence What We Think Shooting the new Type 5 was my first chance to go hands-on with the model line at all and while I'm no seasoned diver like our own James Stacey and our old friend Jason Heaton, I'm genuinely curious to see if I could get one of these to put through the paces underwater. A big portion of that use case comes down to how comfortable you are already with the dial layout, but theoretically, with the big minute hand and luminous dial, it could be a practical C?if unusual C option for a recreational diver. Photo: courtesy Ressence No Ressence is competing in any contest for "thinnest watch," but the oil-filled display never gets old and still impresses me with legibility. Same could be said for the unusual winding and setting design C it's not what you're used to, but it certainly is a creative way to approach the functional challenges of such an unusual watch while utilizing a really sleek design language.
