Pre-Baselworld 2014: Introducing The PanoMaticInverse, Dynamic Exhibitionisim From Glashtte Original

February 28, 2014

Glashtte Original PanoMaticInverse in Stainless Steel By inverting the configuration of various movement components, Glashtte Original displays?a regulator on the dial side of the new PanoMaticInverse. Instead of using the same movement found in the original PanoInverse, an entirely new one was developed, the in-house, self-winding Calibre 91-02. While the concept of inverting movement components is unusual, careful technical and design considerations allow the PanoMaticInverse to achieve a difficult objective: balancing playful inversion with wearability. In 2008, Glashtte Original introduced the PanoInverse XL, the first timepiece from the Saxon-based manufacture to feature this inverted design concept. The idea was to present the highly-decorated duplex swan-neck fine adjustment mechanism through an aperture between 3 and 6 oclock. To facilitate this, a number of movement components were reconfigured and new components developed, leading to the creation of the manually-wound Calibre 66. Glashtte Original first introduced the duplex swan-neck fine adjustment in 2002. In the new PanoMaticInverse, we see a new automatic movement (hence the Matic added to the name) from Glashtte: Calibre 91-02. The movement has a 42-hour power reserve and a very useful large panoramic date display, replacing the retrograde power reserve indicator seen on the PanoInverse XL. There are a few other details that set the PanoMaticInverse apart from its predecessor. Polished blue hour indices set against a tonal track appear cleaner and more elegant than the original's sportier mix of silver arabic numerals and batons on a contrasting black track. The aforementioned large date balances the already asymmetrical dial, while still keeping with the overall modern aesthetic. At 42mm x 12.3mm, the case is proportionally sized to the 38.2mm movement and will still fit nicely under a cuff. Theres an ample amount of negative space on the dial, decorated with Glashtte ribbing, the German equivalent of C?tes de Genve, allowing clear separation between the various high-impact components. The hand-engraved balance bridge is affixed to a plate decorated with perlage C a nice contrast to the linear ribbing on the main dial. Finally, rubies and blued screws usually hidden from view are now front and center C forming an elegant constellation across the dial.? The new self-winding Calibre 91-02 features a 42-hour power reserve. With so much attention paid to inverting the movement, you would think there is little left to appreciate through the watchs sapphire crystal case back. Of course, quite the contrary is true: a finely finished skeletonized two-tone rotor with back-to-back double G insignia appears bold as it moves around a minimal baseplate, also studded with jewels and screws. The PanoMaticInverse is also available in red gold with a brown nubuck alligator strap. The PanoMaticInverse will officially launch in just a few weeks at Baselworld 2014, and will be available in both stainless steel and red gold.
