Introducing: The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox Limited Edition (Live Pics & Pricing)

January 15, 2018

This is Jaeger-LeCoultre's modern take on the original Polaris from 1968 on the occasion of its 50th birthday. While the other models in the new Polaris collection offer totally new takes on the form, with a mix of complications, this is the tribute watch you'd expect from an anniversary collection. The 42mm stainless steel case houses an automatic alarm movement that's hidden behind the deep black dial with its vanilla-colored markers that give the watch some vintage flair. For those who love the original Polaris, this watch should do the trick, though it's also a sturdy modern tool watch in its own right that might introduce some new people into the vintage model. The New Polaris Collection Be sure to check out the rest of the new Polaris collection too: Polaris Automatic Polaris Date Polaris Chronograph Polaris Chronograph WT Why This Watch Matters There's no question that the Polaris is one of the true icons in Jaeger-LeCoultre's past. While some of the other models might be more commercially focused (this is a 1,000 piece limited edition, after all), it's this model that is the real benchmark for those in the know. It's important to note that there have been re-issues of the Polaris before, but this watch is consistent with the rest of the new collection, showing off the varied case finishes, three-finish black dial, and applied markers filled with faux aged lume, while retaining the classic three-crown set-up, inner rotating bezel, and alarm function. Initial Thoughts It's tough not to like this watch. Sure, a reissued Polaris isn't shocking (especially considering the anniversary), but the watch looks great and pays tribute to a real classic. My only practical gripe is about the thickness of the case, which at 15.9mm sits high on the wrist. It's still comfortable, but you do notice the size. One interesting thing to note is that for these 1,000 watches, the caliber 956 movements are actually being assembled in JLC's complications workshop to make sure they've working to the highest standards possible. This isn't something Jaeger is talking about too much, but it's a nice little bit of added value for the collectors who buy these watches.
