Introducing: The MB&F HM7 Aquapod Platinum Red
June 25, 2019
Today we have something new from MB&F to announce C a platinum version of the HM7 Aquapod with a sapphire bezel in striking red.?This new precious metal Aquapod is the fourth model in MB&F's dive-watch-inspired series of central tourbillons. It joins previous versions made in titanium with blue accents (33 pieces), red gold with black accents (66 pieces) and titanium with bright green accents (50 pieces). There will be 25 examples of the HM7 Aquapod Platinum Red, each of which will come supplied with three straps: the red rubber version you see here, a white rubber strap, and a black rubber strap. This is the first platinum version of the HM7 Aquapod, and it's the first MB&F creation to come in red, a color that definitely isn't the first hue to mind when one thinks of nautically inspired watches. It turns out that there is a reason for the decision to make the latest Aquapod in red that goes beyond just looking cool, and it has to do with jellyfish, the organism that inspired the HM7 Aquapod. As one travels deeper and deeper beneath the ocean's surface, less light is able to penetrate the water, and red light is among the first colors to go, rendering red creatures less visible to predators. This is one reason why certain species of jellyfish have evolved to have red innards beneath their transparent bodies.? Initial Thoughts To date, the only Aquapod that I have had a chance to put on my wrist was the original version in titanium, and that watch had plenty of wrist presence despite being a far more comfortable watch than it looked. Given its nearly 54mm diameter, this platinum-cased Aquapod must be seriously heavy. Recognizing this,?MB&F tweaked parts of the movement inside, most likely in an attempt to mitigate some of the weight gain associate with using platinum for the case. They traded the transfer-printed numerals seen in earlier versions of the Aquapod for 3-D numerals that have been sculpted from titanium, a material chosen specifically for its lightness. The tourbillon bridge is now made from sapphire rather than metal, a change that enhances the transparent quality of the watch.?
