Introducing: The Mido Multifort Datometer Limited Edition
March 02, 2018
This new incarnation of the Multifort Datometer is a limited edition created to celebrate Mido's 100th anniversary. The watch draws on an almost 80-year-old model from the company's archives, the Datometer. The model is defined by its central date hand that uses a red crescent to point to the date around the perimeter of the dial, as well as the 12-3-6-9 layout and dagger-shaped hour markers. All three of these traits have been carried over to the new watch, which is a little larger than the original and is presented in a stainless steel case with a rose gold PVD finish. There will be 1,918 individually numbered pieces made, a nod to Mido's founding year. Why This Watch Matters Watch companies love anniversaries, but 100 years is no joke. This is one that's actually worth celebrating (no offense, but numbers like 85, 135, and 215 do not count as milestones). For Mido to look to the past is a smart, if slightly predictable move, and the resulting watch strikes a nice balance. You get a thoroughly modern movement with an 80-hour power reserve while the dial design is almost identical to that of the original 1939 inspiration watch. Little touches like the box sapphire crystal also straddle the past and the present, adding to the overall feel of the watch. Initial Thoughts It's obviously hard to say much without seeing this watch in person, but from the two images we've got here, I'm pretty impressed with this one. Sure, I'd have preferred the watch in a more classic 38mm size versus the more modern 40mm measurement, but that's still a practical, everyday kind of size, and it won't look out of place with a suit or sport coat. The sculpted lugs are a really smart move here, adding something special and a little romantic to a simple, functional watch. That the watch comes in under $1,500 only adds to the allure.
