Introducing: The Montblanc 1858 Automatic (Live Pics & Pricing)

Drawing on inspiration found in the Minerva archive, Montblanc has launched the new 1858 collection with a number of models. This time-only watch is the foundation of the collection, with a svelte 40mm case in brushed steel with a bronze bezel and bronze crown to add a little two-tone flavor to the mix. You've also got the choice of either a classic black dial or a less traditional sunburst champagne, with the latter offering a really unique look. These are everyday watches that will appeal to a lot of consumers looking for something mid-sized that nods to vintage models without being an all-out tribute watch. What we have here is the foundation of the 1858 collection as it's going to continue to grow and evolve, and it's looking like there are lots of good things in store for the future. On its own, however, the 1858 Automatic is still a watch worth paying attention to for its mix of value and styling, along with its slightly contrarian nature. Initial Thoughts I've got to say, I really dig these watches. The little aesthetic cues definitely nod to some of the best mid-century sports watches, but without going overboard and outright copying elements here and there. Some people might lament the lack of an all-steel version, but I actually think the two-tone case sets this watch apart in a sea of sameness and adds a lot of character. Without it, I don't think the overall impression would be nearly as interesting. The closed steel caseback features an adventure-themed engraving. The black-dialed version of the 1858 looks like a larger version of a classic sports watch on the wrist. The champagne-dialed version really plays up the two-tone case and has a softer look overall.
