Introducing: The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th Anniversary Edition (Live Pics & Pricing)

Its been 80 years since Oris introduced its first pointer date mechanism, which has become a signature complication within the larger Oris watch range. The Big Crown collection that this easy-to-read date function graces is likewise a signature Oris collection, and has done much to advance the Swiss watchmakers reputation for crafting interesting, affordable mechanical watches with great vintage looks. To honor the 80th year of the Big Crown Pointer Date, Oris has created a special anniversary edition of its star aviator watch featuring a a 40mm bronze case and a distinctive green dial that looks great now, but might just go perfectly with this watch as the case ages into its eventual patina. As you can see in the next few pictures, the crown and case are made completely of bronze, with the exception of the caseback, which is made of steel and mineral glass and screws down into the back of the watch. Through that back you can see the distinctive red rotor of the Oris 754 movement. Initial Thoughts While this is far from the the first bronze watch weve seen from Oris (in fact, Oris already makes a smaller version of the pointer date in bronze), this watch comes in right at the sweet spot size of 40mm for an aviators timepiece and it demonstrates that Oris has a real commitment to making bronze watches in multiple collections (there are multiple Oris dive models that also incorporate bronze C from fully cased models like this one to others that incorporate bronze accents).
