Introducing: The Oris Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 114 (Live Pics & Pricing)

Employing the latest evolution of Oris's in-house movement, the Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 114 is a GMT-equipped expression of the brand's now well-known 10-day, hand-wound caliber. Originally launched in 2014 as the Calibre 110, the 114 retains the non-linear power reserve indicator and the date display at nine o'clock, as originally seen on the Calibre 111, but adds a GMT scale to the outer edge of the dial and pairs it with a GMT function capable of 30-minute resolution. ??? Now that I've got Newfoundland's attention, Oris's in-house movement platform is the crown jewel of their line up, so the creation of a new iteration of the movement is something of a big deal for the brand. Furthermore, while this is not the first time that Oris has used a Calibre 1XX movement in a ProPilot format, this more sporty format is the launch application for the Calibre 114. The choice seems fitting for a GMT watch, not only for its connection with aviation but also with the somewhat rough-and-tumble realities of modern travel.? The ProPilot Calibre 114 is a great example of the overlap between Oris's aviation designs and their in-house watchmaking program. Initial Thoughts Available in two versions, one with a black dial and a brushed bezel and another with an anthracite dial with a polished bezel (seen in these photos), the ProPilot Calibre 114 has a 44mm-wide steel case, red accents, and the strong legibility and Arabic markers common to Oris' ProPilot range. I was able to go hands-on with the anthracite version and while definitely a large watch, the ProPilot Calibre 114 wears nicely and feels very well made. The dial has a brushed finish and its color transitions between silver/grey and grey/brown depending on the available light.? It's a great looking watch and manages to feel both special (hand wound, giant power reserve indicator, display case back, etc) and rather toolish, with its super legible handset, uncommon but useful date display, and that pointer date-style GMT function. Operating in the "caller" GMT format, the Calibre 114 is designed to easily adapt to showing you the time in a different timezone, with the local time and date functioning much like a standard watch. While 44mm is a bit big for my wrist, the specialization for 30-minute resolution is a good feature and I rather liked the unobtrusive manner in which the 2nd zone is displayed and how well that display integrates into the ProPilot look and feel.?As a fan of GMT watches, it's fun to see Oris integrate the functionality into their impressive 10-day movement as they continue to evolve their in-house offerings.?
