Introducing: The Panerai Radiomir 1940 Collection With Matte Green Dials (Live Pics & Pricing)

July 16, 2019

Green is undoubtably hot. Like white hot...well, kind of. In recent times, we have seen the likes of Oris, Montblanc, and IWC all experiment with green dials. This past week saw Panerai announce a core line of green dial Radiomir references too.?All four come with 1940 style Radiomir cases, with their classic cushion shape and thick lugs. There are three models with 45mm steel cases and one model with a black sandblasted ceramic case 48mm. ?This is not the first time we have seen green dials from Panerai. The original 2011 Bronzo was the first Panerai to feature a green dial, followed by the Special Edition for Harrods, and then a trio of Limited Editions (PAM735, PAM736 and PAM737) in 2017.?Unlike those watches, these four will not be limited editions. These new references will however be available exclusively at Panerai boutiques, a continuation of the trend we are seeing of brands move away from third-party retailers. The PAM997 on the wrist. From a technical perspective, all four watches boast in-house movements. The Radiomir 45mm (PAM00995) is fitted with the P.4000 caliber, Panerais thinnest automatic movement, with a satisfyingly clean time-only dial. Then there is the Radiomir GMT 45mm (PAM00998), which is fitted with the P. 4001, providing a second time zone, AM/PM indication, and the power reserve displayed on the back. The same caliber was modified into the P.4002, which shows the power reserve indicator on the dial, a feature unique to the Radiomir GMT Power Reserve 45mm (PAM00999). Each of the three automatic movements have a bi-directional off-centered micro-rotor in tungsten alloy and a power reserve of three days. The only one to have a hand-wound mechanical movement is PAM00997, which comes in a monstrous 48mm ceramic case, and is fitted with a P.3000 calibre indicating hours, minutes and small seconds.? Initial Thoughts Panerai CEO Jean-Marc Pontrou, has his job cut out for him, moving the classic tool manufacturer into a new chapter after the retirement of longtime CEO and living legend Angelo Bonati. Panerai had a strong SIHH, with clearer product segmentation and watches linked to special experiences.?When it comes to these new references, I was pleased to see the use of micro-rotors in three of the four, slimming the case thicknesses down. The domed crystal adds a touch of vintage love that Paneristi worldwide will celebrate.?Panerai has always been about the sandwich dial, and I was pleased to see all four watches utilizing them here. The 45mm sizing works practically while honoring tradition, but I do fear the 48mm ceramic case may be a little punchy for most wrists to handle. That said, the deep green pigmented dials are tremendous, independent of current trends, with a warm depth that really needs to be seen in the metal to be appreciated. The dial, the domed crystal, and the movements combine to make what is to my mind a nicely balanced quadrafecta from Panerai.? The PAM 995.
