Introducing: The Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition 47mm

January 14, 2019

Alongside the recently-announced Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nry Edition and the limited model that includes a free-diving experience with Nry himself, Panerai is offering a similar two-watch edition made with their longtime ambassador Mike Horn. Horn is an incredibly accomplished world explorer, sailor, and environmentalist and this is not his first time working on a special edition with Panerai. The new Submersible Mike Horn Edition 47mm is a two watch collection that offers a distinctive take on the Submersible's usual styling with one version being very limited in production as it includes access to an Arctic expedition lead by Horn himself.? Initial Thoughts As a fan of the Submersible styling at a general level, two things come to mind when I go over the supplied images and details for these two models: they both look amazing, and I still don't have the wrist for a 47mm Panerai. The two versions are largely identical but can be easily differentiated by the color of the luminous material used on the dial. The standard model is the green-lumed PAM00984, while the PAM00985 uses a blue coloring and is limited to 19 pieces. While very similar, the PAM00985 costs double that of its non-limited sibling as each of the 19 owners will have the option to join Mike Horn on a trip to the polar ice floes of the Arctic.? Aside from the coloring, the limited production, and that awesome excursion, the PAM00984 and PAM00985 are essentially identical, with 47mm cases made from Panerai's Eco-Titanium (sourced from recycled titanium), titanium relief bezels (very cool), 300m water resistance, and the use of Panerai's in-house 3-day P.9010 automatic movement. Keen eyes will notice that the dial text is actually printed on the underside of the crystal and the general dial design is more modern than that of your standard submersible.? Mounted to a strap made of recycled material, I think both of these editions look great and balance a sporty modern dial design with the somewhat throwback appeal of an engraved titanium bezel. Being both limited to 19 pieces and offering a spot on an expedition with an accomplished explorer, the Submersible Mike Horn Edition 47mm PAM00985 is considerably more expensive than it's non-limited counterpart, but I kinda doubt Panerai will have trouble finding 19 buyers who would be very interested in the extra-curricular activities included with the purchase price (I know I would be) .?
