Introducing: The Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpagraphe Chronometre

This year Parmigiani Fleurier has produced their first in-house automatic chronograph, which comes in two versions. The Kalpa Chronor is visually and aesthetically a follow-on from last year's award winning Chronor Anniversaire, and in addition to being a 36,000 vph, self-winding chronograph, also has a movement made of solid rose gold, with the bridges elaborately pierced and decorated. This is a less ornate version of the same basic movement, with all the same technical features. Why This Watch Matters At $85,000, the Kalpa Chronor (with a solid gold movement) is in competition with high-end chronographs from such established chronograph makers as Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Sohne, and Patek Philippe (for a snapshot of their work, check out our Three On Three on hand-wound chronographs from these makers). This less elaborate version offers the identical case aesthetics, but with a less ornate movement that's aimed at those wanting a less costly and less baroquely ornate approach to movement design. Initial Thoughts While the Kalpa Chronor is undoubtedly intended to be a showcase not only for technical horology and movement construction, but also high level movement decoration, the Kalpagraphe Chronometre takes a much less go-big-or-go-home approach. We'd expect the quality of finishing to be comparable, but the design of the movement C without the openworking of plates and bridges in the Chronor C as well as the use of conventional materials rather than solid gold, means a bit less oomph in the cosmetics department. However this is still a high grade, in-house, COSC-certified integrated automatic chronograph movement C something available from few other manufacturers.
