The Ralph Lauren Sporting Classic Chronometer Gets A Trim To 39mm

If theres one trend we can stand behind around here, its the return to classic sizing in gentlemans watches. When Ralph Lauren first introduced the Sporting Classic Chronometer, its 44.8 mm diameter brought with it a certain intimidation factor that betrayed its title of Classic. As we near 2015, Ralph Lauren has brought the Sporting Classic into more traditional territory, with the all new Chronometer sized at 39 mm. While the Sporting Classic Chronometer has managed to trim up its waistline, the masculine appeal is still there. A large, flat bezel with oversized screw heads frames the throwback dial design. Prominent lugs with more screw heads at the pin ends are hard to miss as well. If the case comes off as high fashion, the dial at least recalls a classic German Naval Chronometer, or "Kriegsmarine" style design, with a railroad chapter ring and running seconds sub-dial at 6 oclock. Roman hour numerals and Breguet hands add the final unique touches. As the name suggests, this is a COSC-certified chronometer. Inside the Sporting Classic Chronometer beats a Swiss made RL366 self-winding mechanical movement, or, at the core of it, a nice Sellita caliber. It offers 42 hours of reserve and should provide a nice view around back with vertical C?tes de Genve stripes and perlage finishing. No pics of that bit, for the moment.
