Introducing: The Sinn U50, U50 SDR, And U50 S Dive Watches
April 29, 2020
Spring is really starting to look more like Hot Dive Watch Summer, and hot off the heels of a few really fun announcements, Sinn has dropped their own offering by way of a new mid-size U-Series diver. Available in several versions, this is the new U50 diver, and what you need to know is that it's 41mm wide, 11.2mm thick, and available with a Tegiment hardened steel case.? Initial Thoughts Sinn's U-Series represents their most current and cutting-edge dive watch offerings. With bold legibility and chunky-yet-modern styling, the U has earned its way into a lot of enthusiasts' hearts and was something of an unimpeachable uber-diver when I got into watches over a decade ago. Trouble is, the core product, the U1, is 44mm wide. While it wears well for a large watch, it is still a large watch. Over the past several years, customers have been asking Sinn for something in a more classic sport watch size. Well, they were listening, and the U50 takes much of what made the U1 a much-loved modern staple and ports it into a 41mm case. For a certain crowd (myself included), this is a huge release.? If 41mm x 11.2mm wasn't enough to get your attention, how about 500-meter water resistance, a dual-sided anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown, a solid caseback, low-pressure resistance, and assurances that the whole package meets both DIN 8310 and DIN 8306 diving requirements (along with Euro diving equipment standards EN 250/EN14143 with certification from DNV GL). If you want to make a modern dive watch without cutting any corners, Sinn does it with typical German panache.?Timekeeping is managed by a Swiss Sellita SW 300-1 with automatic winding, a date display at three, and a 4 Hz heartbeat.? Weighing in at 74 grams without a strap, the U50 comes in several different iterations based on three model expressions (delineated above). First, the bead-blasted steel U50 which has a matching steel bezel with Tegiment hardening and optional Tegiment hardening for the case (then called the U50-T). Second, the U50 SDR, which has a Tegiment hardened bezel but with a black coating (can also be optioned with a full Tegiment hardened steel case, thus the U50-T SDR). Finally, the range-topping U50S, which has a fully black Tegiment hardened PVD treatment for the case and bezel. All models are available on a matched steel bracelet or your pick of several rubber straps (red, white, or black).? Starting at $2,180 for a U50 on a rubber strap and topping out at $2,940 for a U50 S on a matched black bracelet (also fully Tegiment treated), the U50 range looks simply incredible. With zero "fauxtina" or vintage inspiration, an excellent (and thin) case size, and the specs for a true tool dive watch, this is one I simply cannot wait to try on. I've loved the U1 for a long time but sadly never had the wrists for it. Now, I don't have to.?
