We Paired '90s Watches With '90s Fashion

Welcome to '90s Week, where we're revisiting the raddest (and most underrated) watches of the decade, plus the trends and innovations that defined the end of the 20th century. Plug in your dial-up modem and grab a Crystal Pepsi.?We'll be here all week. In this second installment, the HODINKEE Lookbook is celebrating the 1990s C a decade close to many of our hearts ('90s kids, raise your hands). There's just something so charming about the fashion of this decade, from the brilliant primary colors to the oversized threads to the sense of experimentation. The '90s, from a style perspective, are a living time capsule. We weren't honoring the past, but rather pushing the envelope.? It's hard to say if this aesthetic is timeless, but then again, it's been the blueprint for the past five years of fashion (because in clothing, as in watches, everything goes in cycles). So we were excited to pay homage from head to toe C to wrist! C as part of our '90s Week extravaganza.? For this shoot, we took to the streets of New York with stylist Malaika Crawford (of Three on Three fame) and photographer Ysa Prez, and paired some truly killer '90s styles with equally bodacious watches tied to the era. Below, you'll find period-appropriate fashion that's as colorful (and as denim) as you might expect. The watches are a mix of true '90s icons of horology and those that came later but pay homage to the wily decade.? Now, go break out your TAG Heuer and your Tommy Hilfiger. We'll meet you at Blockbuster.? G-Shock DW5600CA-8 In Grey Camo This outfit goes so well with this watch. It's the color palette from the camo digital display matching the pants, and the grey going with the eggshell top. I don't think it gets more '90s than a digital watch. Patek Philippe Ellipse 3989J I just remember insisting on this look C it had to be this Burberry miniskirt! I'm loving that she's wearing a bomber jacket with a Patek Ellipse. It's the most juxtaposed dress watch with streetwear. This literally is what school girls looked like where I grew up in London. Bulgari Aluminium Automatic And Omega "Bond" Seamaster 300m Omega is the classic, right? It's James Bond. It says '90s, and so does this baggy look. We love the baggy. For the Bulgari, I really think it's such a graphic watch. It kind of looks like it's plastic, doesn't it? It's cartoonish, I would say, which echoes her outfit, as well. It's the most mid-'90s thing I've ever seen, and so I wanted to pair it with a piece of '90s fashion in the Timberlands. It's a '90s clich almost. As if he bought the whole look at Jimmy Jazz in Downtown Brooklyn.– Malaika CRAWFORD Hoodie, Supreme; pants, Louis Vuitton; shoes, Timberland; ring, Camilla Dietz Bergeron. Swatch Sistem51 HODINKEE Spotlight Neon Remix The color of the Swatch looks great with the logo here on the shirt. I feel like Swatch is, or was, such a household name in the '90s. And I like that this watch is a modern recreation of a model from the era, sort of like the Adidas x Gucci collab. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Dual Time I think it's particularly cool that this watch is two-tone, because that's such a '90s vibe, and it's a dual-time as opposed to just a regular Royal Oak. I like the fact that it's a woman wearing a complication because you didn't really see that so often back then. Oh, and the baggy denim is just pure '90s fashion in the best way.– Malaika CRAWFORD Shirt, Cherry Vintage; pants, JNCO; shoes, Simple. Cartier Pasha And Rolex Explorer 14270 Jacket, Cherry Vintage; shirt, Polo Ralph Lauren; pants, Heron Preston; ring, Camilla Dietz Bergeron. The Cartier Pasha on a man was the only way to make this work. I like that it's also two-tone. He's giving high-school jock energy in this photo with that jacket. I think it's ironic that he's wearing a Pasha, which would've been a girl's watch at that time. Instead of your girlfriend borrowing your watch, you could borrow hers. And then the Explorer C it's the perfect unisex tool watch because it's 36mm. It's masculine without being overbearing, which is so cool.– Malaika CRAWFORD Top, Madewell; skirt, Adidas x Gucci. TAG Heuer Formula 1 41mm Date I love the Formula 1. This is where TAG excels. It's so sporty as well, especially with the letterman jacket. I think the best of TAG is watches like the original Formula 1. Watches that are not too serious. The bezel is really cool, and the crown matches the bezel. And the LV jacket really just ties it all together with the white pants. It's almost a year-round, go-anywhere look.
