The Glashutte Original SeaQ With A Green Dial

July 27, 2021

Originally launched in 2019, Glashtte Original's SeaQ is a luxe dive watch with vintage styling that blends a sporty late-'60s skin diver format with GO's elegant take on German watchmaking via design inspiration from the brand's Spezimatic Typ RP TS 200 dive watch of 1969.? Forming the base of the brand's Spezialist line, the SeaQ line has been expanded via a handful of versions and, as is the move in 2021, Glashtte Original recently launched a green dial version. With a matching green ceramic bezel, this newly green SeaQ is available on a steel bracelet, a rubber strap, or a synthetic nylon strap. With a fetching 39.5mm wide steel case that is 12.15mm thick, the SeaQ offers a sizing that will suit a wide array of wrists while also not skimping on dive watch bona fides. Rocking 200 meters of water resistance, a closed caseback, a screw-down crown, and a uni-directional bezel, the SeaQ isn't lacking in the sporty department and it has the subtle good looks of an excellent day-to-day sport watch. Given the price point and the brand, it's unsurprising that the SeaQ would sport an in-house automatic movement from Glashtte Original. Called the caliber 39-11, this automatic movement ticks at 4 Hz and offers ~40 hours of power reserve. Due to the closed caseback, the fine movement finishing C as is common in a watch from Glashtte Original C is not on display. With little more than a new color to connect with current trends, the SeaQ remains a great-looking and sporty addition to the Glashtte Original lineup and the green version can be had for $9,000, on either a rubber or synthetic strap (add $300 for a fold-over buckle), or $10,200 on the steel bracelet. What We Think While somewhat outside of the norm for Glashtte Original, which is commonly known for its dressier designs, the SeaQ pulls from the brand's past via the well-known skin diver archetype. Not unlike the SLA017 from Seiko (and the several similar iterations released since 2017), the SeaQ maintains the look and feel of a common vintage dive watch, but with modern Glashtte Original-derived details and finishing. Priced directly alongside heavy-hitters like the Rolex Submariner, the SeaQ's elevated take on the skin diver silhouette is likely intended for buyers looking for something a bit more under-the-radar, or for those who love Glashtte Original but would like something sportier than the likes of a Senator Tourbillon or a PanoReserve. While I have yet to see any example of the SeaQ in person, on paper they have nailed the sizing, the details look thoughtful and not overdone (not to mention that synthetic strap), and while the loosely late-'60s vibe may be about as common today as it was in 1969, that doesn't mean it's lost any of its appeal.
