Introducing: The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition

July 25, 2019

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now just a year away, and in keeping with recent tradition, Omega, the official sponsor and timer of the Olympic Games, is presenting limited edition watches to commemorate the event. Here we have one of them, a Seamaster Planet Ocean with a color palate inspired by the flag of the host country. As you can see, the white ceramic bezel features a red "20," calling out the year of the next Olympiad, and the seconds are read via a lollipop hand that's been colored in in red. This little red circle, which sweeps each minute across its white dial canvas, is of course an homage to the simple yet iconic design of the Japanese flag. ? While the watch is very much of the moment in its capacity as a limited edition tribute to the upcoming Olympic Games, it's of course worth mentioning that it's a serious tool watch, with a whole heck of a lot of engineering behind it. For starters, it's a diver with a water resistance rating to 600 meters and a fully functional unidirectional rotating bezel and helium escape valve. By virtue of its Master Chronometer-certified co-axial automatic movement, it's also hugely antimagnetic, to 15,000 gauss, in fact, so you'll never have to worry about the electronics you probably use daily affecting this watch's functionality. When you flip it over, you can see the in-house caliber 8800 through an anti-reflective sapphire case back bearing the emblem of the 2020 Olympics. Initial Thoughts This is a fun design that pays tribute to the Land of the Rising Sun in a minimalist and tasteful way, kind of like the Japanese flag itself. While the watch is shown here on a white alligator strap, it's worth noting that you do also get a NATO strap and a stainless steel bracelet, so if all white everything isn't your thing, there are ways to tone the overall look down a wee bit while bringing this watch more comfortably into "sports watch" territory. ?
