Introducing: The TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper In Gold
April 09, 2024
After a year of steady expansion for the very well-received TAG Heuer Carrera "Glassbox." the recently revived Skipper is getting its second iteration by way of a rose gold case and matching dial accents.? Less than a year after the launch of the steel Skipper, we now have a matching model in rose gold. Aside from the change in case metals, TAG Heuer is not messing with the Glassbox-derived formula, as the rose gold example retains its blue dial and nautical-themed coloring (even down to the red hand for the chronograph seconds). Sizing remains the same, with the gold Skipper measuring 39mm wide, 13.9m thick (including the sapphire crystal), and 46mm lug-to-lug.? The movement is also unchanged from its steel sibling, with the Skipper using a special version of the Heuer 02, the TH-20-06. That means you get a 12-hour column wheel actuated chronograph along with a date at six and central chronograph seconds. The movement ticks at 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of 80 hours.? Being solid pink gold, the pricing is a bit more dear than the steel version ($6,750) as the gold Skipper carries a price tag of CHF 21,000 and is not a limited edition.? What We Think As much as I'd have preferred for this to be in yellow gold rather than red C?a la the Gosling-worn 1158CH-inspired yellow gold Carrera Glassbox we saw back in February C?I really like the Skipper (and indeed the Glassbox), and this is no exception. I can be/have been hard on TAG Heuer in the past but despite not being all that much of a chronograph enthusiast, I love the way these watches wear and the way they look. And red gold doesn't spoil the appeal.?If you don't get the appeal of the Skipper, or the wider Carrera, I highly recommend checking out Ben's Reference Points on the Heuer Carrera for some background. Then, follow it up with this excellent story from Jeff Stein about the specific popularity of the "Skipperera."? That said, there has to be some consideration of price, and while the steel model is deeply in the mid-four-figure range, this rose gold example is considerably more expensive, and I think that the price point will maintain this as a special but niche offering within the Carrera catalog. For the gold version of a commercially available steel watch, I'm ok with this reality (even if I can't afford it). ? So what say you C steel or gold? I think TAG Heuer is on an absolute tear with these Glassbox Carrera designs and I am thrilled to see the brand make more watches that get enthusiasts excited.?
