Tonight we rallied the Hodinkee troops for an evening of celebrity watch-spotting at the Met Gala. All eyes were glued to the Vogue Livestream: it was a decadent frenzy of long dress trains, strand upon strand of pearls and perfectly symmetrical camellia flowers. All to pay tribute to the fashion polymath, Mr. Karl Lagerfeld. This year the costume institute's Spring 2023 exhibition, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" will examine the work of the late designer, through his sketches and designs. Lagerfeld was a modern day impresario, who lived his seven-decades-long career as a true multi-hyphenate, long before the age of social media, before the likes of Virgil Abloh or Pharrell.? Remembered best as the creative director of Chanel, Fendi, Chlo and his own eponymous label as well as the owner of his celebrity cat Choupette, Lagerfeld was a true character: never seen without his black sunglasses, a white high neck collar, cut-off gloves, Chrome Hearts rings and ?sometimes even a watch!
