Introducing: Track The Date And Time For The Next 100 Years C If You Can Figure Out How To Read It
July 09, 2021
Ochs und Junior is the very definition of a "cult brand" and the recently released "cca," or "calendario cent'anni" is exactly the kind of watch that's earned them a sterling reputation with folks in-the-know. Dr. Ludwig Oechslin's vision of simplifying the way we read otherwise complicated watches drove the design of this watch. Inside the titanium case is a modified Ulysesse Nardin movement that displays hour, minute, second, date and month up to the leap year accurately for 100 years. Through a series of dots that rotate around the dial, the watch can track the proper length of a month (from 28 to 31 days) and it doesn't need to be corrected every four years; it's made to account for leap years. A module consisting of just nine components designed by Dr. Oechslin and installed on the UN 320 caliber is responsible for powering the display that, while pared-down and simple, takes some knowledge to decode. A traveling rectangular dot on the date spiral reveals the date, while the month and leap year are indicated on the central rotating disk. Hours and minutes are read as you would any other watch, and at 6 o'clock there's a rotating seconds disk that doubles as a visual indicator that everything is in fact running. Initial Thoughts Dr. Oechslin doesn't play by the rules, and that's earned him a legion of loyal fans. He pushes the staid Swiss design tradition to the side and re-imagines timekeeping on his own terms, and that's something to be admired, whether or not watches like the cca appeal to your aesthetic sensibilities. The cca is a fantastic example of how he addresses a very complex problem (accurately keeping track of the time and date for 100 years) with a very simple solution (a module that's made of nine parts). In short, that's his entire philosophy. Paring down to only what's essential in an unorthodox, beautiful fashion. The titanium case of the cca measures 40mm across and 11mm tall, dimensions that fall squarely within the modern sweet spot. The case, of course, is also designed by Oechslin. Ochs und Junior watches are often customizable by the buyer, but the cca is only offered in three dial configurations, and customers can opt for a PVD black coating on the case.In July 2018 Dr. Oechslin wrote an essay on the philosophy behind his date designs. With the cca, he's staying true to his philosophy and proving yet again that breaking the rules pays off.
