Introducing: The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight
March 21, 2018
Created as a further nod to their legacy dive watches, the newly announced Black Bay Fifty-Eight is Tudor's latest entry to the ever-expanding Black Bay line (alongside a new GMT model too). Powered by Tudor's MT5402 movement, the new big story with the Black Bay Fifty-Eight is its 39mm sizing. Where the Black Bay has been offered in several sizes, the core dive watches (including the chronograph and the new GMT) are 41mm wide.?A new profile is definitely something worth paying attention to. Initial Thoughts Meant to replicate the charm and appeal of Tudor's vintage reference 7924, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight is not only a bit smaller than a standard Black Bay, it's also quite a bit thinner, coming in at a svelte 11.9mm (vs 14.75mm on the 41mm wide models). In addition to the new proportions, the Fifty-Eight employs a gilt colorway, with a gold-tone used for the bezel, hands, and dial markings. Finally, in a further connection with the aesthetic of the original Big Crown of the late 50s, the Fifty-Eight use of a colorless brushed steel crown tube.? Available on your choice of Tudor's rivet-style steel bracelet, a brown leather strap, or an MN-style black fabric strap with a gold center stripe, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight will almost assuredly be a hit with those who prefer a smaller case size. Also in-line with the Sub-adjacent styling is the application of a new movement range from Tudor. With gold accents, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight looks great on any of the three available strap options. Sized specifically for smaller watches, the new MT5402 expands Tudor's Manufacture lineup with a COSC certified movement complete with a 70-hour power reserve, a variable inertia balance, and a non-magnetic silicon balance spring.? While personally I would have preferred steel accents versus gilt, the gold-tone does better connect with the original reference and a similar application has been a popular in its use on the 41mm Black Bay. Regardless, the the smaller sizing, no-date execution, and the new movement are all solid choices in the latest branch of the Black Bay family tree. Stay tuned for more as we go hands-on with the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight very shortly.
