March 21, 2014
The IWC Pilot's Watch Spitfire Chronograph Edition in 18k red gold. The Tribeca Film Festival is known for its showcase of both emerging and established filmmakers in the heart of downtown New York. In its second year of support of The Tribeca Film Institute (the non-profit affiliate associated with the Festival), IWC has once again created a unique timepiece to be auctioned in conjunction with Antiquorum. The piece-unique Pilots Watch Spitfire Chronograph Edition "Tribeca Film Festiva 2014" presents an uncommon opportunity for interested collectors to support both their love of horology and a passion for cinema. The slate grey dial and deep red subdials reference New York's The aptly named Spitfire is a bold rendition of IWCs modern Pilots Watch Chronograph.?The slate-colored dial features two deep red subdials, a small hacking seconds at 12 oclock and a 60-minute register directly opposite at 6 oclock. Arabic numerals outlined in red gold sit around the dial with a seconds track for the flyback chronograph function at the very edge. At 3 oclock, youll find an aperture for the altimeter-inspired date display. Overall, the watchs contrasting color scheme of deep red and slate is inspired by Hollywoods iconic red carpets and the New Yorks steely grandeur," according to IWC. It's the same color scheme found on the dial of last year's Tribeca watch, though that was a Portuguese instead of a Pilot's Chronograph. IWC's altimeter-style date display is visible through an aperture at 3 o'clock. The 18k red gold case measures 43mm, with a thickness of 15.5mm, housing IWCs in-house self-winding calibre 89365 with 68-hour power reserve. While the solid case back doesnt allow you to see the movement, it's crafted entirely of red gold and engraved with the Tribeca Film Festival Logo. There's no denying that in steel this is a sport watch through-and-through, but the red gold case and more refined dial treatment give it a different personality entirely. The solid red gold case back features the Tribeca Film Festival logo. The Pilot's Watch Spitfire Edition is the second watch produced by IWC to commemorate its partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival. Last year we had a hands-on look at the first, a limited edition Portuguese Automatic, which came in a limited edition of 100 steel pieces and a unique platinum piece. The platinum unique piece was estimated between $20,000 and $30,000, but ended up selling for $60,000 at the Antiquorum auction. The IWC Pilots Watch Spitfire Chronograph Edition Tribeca Film Festival 2014 will be auctioned at Antiquorums Madison Avenue Showroom on April 9, 2014.
