Editor's Note: The HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Weekend, or H10 as we're calling it here at HQ, is now just two weeks away. We thought it would be fun leading up to the big weekend to ask our editors and writers to each pick one of their favorite stories from the first decade of HODINKEE to share again with you all. It could be a story with personal significance, a story that changed their relationship to watches, or just one that they really want everyone to check out again. Each day from now until December 7 we'll be publishing a different person's selection. Enjoy. Way back when, I used to work at an auction house (Sotheby's, to be exact). And way back when, I wo...

As Ulysse Nardin has streamlined its product line-up over the last few years, the Diver family has become one of the collection's anchors (if you'll pardon the pun). Until now though, these mostly three-hand-and-date watches have been on the big side, sitting at 44mm or larger. Today that changes with the introduction of a new collection of Divers that preserve the aesthetics and details of their larger brethren but in a more manageable 42mm size. Sure, that's still not approaching vintage diver territory, but it's definitely a huge difference that will open this collection up to many new people. There are both blue and black dial/bezel variants and a handful of great strap options to choose...

In addition to releasing its main collection watches each year, Cartier has recently been launching capsule collections under the "Priv" name, with each year seeing a famous silhouette get some special treatments and reinterpretations. This year it's all about the Tonneau, that neither round nor square shape that Cartier first started using over a century ago in 1906. Ahead of SIHH 2019, Cartier is teasing two variations, the Tonneau Large (seen here) and the Tonneau XL Dual Time Skeleton. There are two Tonneau Large models, one in rose gold with a champagne dial and one in platinum with a silvered dial. Both measure up at 46.1mm long, 26.2mm wide at the center, and 8.8mm thick, meaning they...

It's hard to think of a brand with more interesting stories to tell about heritage, watchmaking, and style than Cartier. The design house has been creating objects of desire for well over a century and with a shocking level of consistency, always managing to envision that next thing that's going to make you the envy of all your friends. Looking back over the first decade of HODINKEE we've been extremely fortunate to share many of these stories with you, ranging from in-depth historical tales to hands-on reviews of the latest watches. Here is a selection of the very best. Enjoy! A Look Inside The Archives ...

The Porsche 911 has been around in one form or another since 1963, and though there have been some major engineering changes over the last fifty-five years, the basic lines of the car are more or less unchanged, with the basic configuration (rear engine, 2 +2 seating) unchanged as well. Porsche Design's watches have more or less followed the same philosophy, although there has been, of necessity, more variation in the watch designs than in the design of the car; after all, Porsche Design is concerned with creating a whole family of distinct timepieces. Still, it remains true that Porsche Design watches are generally very recognizable as such, and in conjunction with the launch of the 8th ver...

Yesterday H. Moser & Cie. presented two new models in the Bucherer Blue Editions collection, available exclusively at Bucherer, the Swiss-based retailer with locations throughout Europe. These are the second and third watches that Moser has released as part of its partnership with Bucherer. To date, Bucherer has collaborated with a number of watchmakers on this line, and even partnered on a Blue Editions motorcycle with Harley Davidson.? What's immediately notable about both of these editions is that they don't seem to follow the script set forth for Bucherer Blue Editions, namely, the incorporation of blue colors and accents...

As part of its pre-SIHH 2019 reveal, Cartier has given us a peek at its latest additions to the Priv collection. They include the Tonneau Large models we showed you yesterday as well as the Tonneau XL Skeleton Dual Time we have for you here. These watches are definitely on the big side, measuring 52.4mm long and 29.8mm wide at the center, though the curved profile and sub-12mm thickness will almost certainly help them wear a little smaller than you might expect. The two models are technically identical, with one rendered in rose gold and the other in platinum, and they're a reinterpretation of the dual time models released back in the 1990s. The in-house caliber 9919 MC powers both timezone...

The watches that Panerai created for the Italian Navy are remarkable objects for a number of reasons. The Radiomir and Luminor watches were not, originally, created with any idea of making compelling design objects per se. Rather, they were created, using the best technology of their time, to fulfill a single purpose, which was to tell time reliably and as accurately as possible during military operations occurring under extremely challenging conditions. When the first Radiomir watches were produced on the eve of the Second World War, their basic characteristics C large size, generous use of radium paint, and great simplicity in dial design C were not determined by aesthetics, but rather, by...

As we head into the HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Weekend, it seems like a pretty good time to look back and round up the most exciting adventure watches from Oris and the coolest adventures they took us on. Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! There is an undeniable connection between space travel and watches. It's always been there, though it has evolved a bit over the decades. In the early days it came down to a pretty basic need C if youre locking yourself in a big metal tube and shooting it into orbit, it's probably a good idea to have a reliable tool on your wrist. But its grown into much more than that. There's a romanticism and a sense of striving that's represented by venturing into outer s...

Shown last week in Paris, France, the following is a selection of a new collection of unique watches called "Mcaniques Sauvages" from Vacheron Constantin's remarkable Les Cabinotiers department. The department, which is comprised of a collection of the brand's most talented watchmakers, is tasked with the creation both unique high complications and an array of artistic expressions including bespoke engraving and enamel work (Jack shared a very impressive example here). If you want a wild one-off Vacheron that pushes the bleeding edge of handmade craftsmanship, you'll need to speak to Les Cabinotiers.? Mcaniques Sauvages is a bespoke collection inspired by wild ...

It's hard to believe that just a few years ago you couldn't buy a Grand Seiko in the western world. But it's true. In a relatively short period of time though, the brand has gone from an underground cult favorite to one of the most widely respected watchmakers on the planet, and for good reason. Picking just a handful of Grand Seiko stories from our first decade to feature here was definitely a challenge, but this should give you a good sense of what Grand Seiko represents and why you should be paying close attention to what comes next. Celebrating The Right Way In 2017 Grand Seiko took a big step and bec...

It feels like just yesterday that I was sitting in a tent in front of Geneva's La Rserve hotel excitedly watching bids fly around for some of the year's more exciting watches. In reality it was almost a month ago, and that means it's time for the annual December auctions here in New York City. Things kick off tomorrow night at Phillips with "Styled," a special auction presented in partnership with classic menswear magazine The Rake and online retail powerhouse Mr. Porter. In reality, the sale itself is nothing out of the ordinary for Phillips C there are a ton of very nice watches from different eras, with a focus on the most desirable references C but the marketing and presentation of the ...
