Watch Spotting: Legendary Golf Club Maker Scotty Cameron Rocking A Vintage Seiko Diver
A poor craftsman blames his tools; a master craftsman respects his tools. Its no surprise that golf club maker Scotty Cameron wears an OG tool watch C?a trusty Seiko diver. Scotty is known for making the best putters in the business. His counterpart in the watch world might be George Daniels and his putters have won more than a few Masters tournaments (including last week's, in the hands of one Tiger Woods).?It's also noteworthy that one of Cameron's putters, made in 2000, that served as a backup for Woods during the era of the "Tiger Slam" recently sold at auction for $88,809.? In a recent flashback post on Instagram, a weathered Seiko adorns Scottys wrist as ...
Introducing: The Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Zagato 100th Anniversary
Long before designers were using CAD software and 3-D modeling, the Zagato design house was executing bulbous curves and sweeping lines in their custom coachwork on some of Italys most significant cars. Ugo Zagatos expertise came from building lightweight aluminum body panels for aircraft, and the aerospace influence clearly informed much of the firms design philosophy. Zagato-bodied designs are distinct for their lack of straight lines or angles. The firms automotive legacy started as early as 1928 with a Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeo 1750 winning the Mille Miglia. Over the years Zagato has perfected a winning formula both to the eye and on the track: Strip the vehicle of any unnecessary cre...

Editors' Picks: Forbidden Fruit: Four Awesome Watch Brands That Aren't Available In The U.S.
Last year the U.S. was the second largest market for Swiss watch exports, at a figure of CHF 2.22 billion. That number measures sales from Swiss manufacturers to authorized dealers in the U.S., not necessarily their customers. And that's just Swiss exports! There are plenty of other nations with strong horological firepower sending watches over to America. In other words, the United States is a massive market for those making timepieces. But that doesn't mean that every watch reaches our shores. To enter the American market is an enormous task for watchmakers no matter what size they are. Keep in mind it took Tudor 19 years to re-enter the U.S. market after pulli...

Lange & Sohne will release a different limited edition watch to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Lange 1. Each watch is rendered in white gold with a silver dial/blue hands and markers combo that is flat-out stunning. Today we're getting the most extreme incarnation yet, a new rendition of the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar. The basics of what you get are right there in the name, but this watch executes on that promise in some really unusual and compelling ways. First off, the tourbillon is totally hidden, only visible through the sapphire caseback, suspended between tw...

Hands-On: The A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Date
The Zeitwerk, in its varying incarnations seems so fundamental a part of the identity of A. Lange & Sohne that it's hard to believe that it was launched fairly recently, in 2009. The Zeitwerk is part of a quite small class of wristwatches which in addition to having a jumping hours display (which is already uncommon) also have a jumping minutes display as well, and which includes such timepieces as Vianny Halter's Opus 3 for Harry Winston, the IWC Pallweber (in both pocket and wristwatch incarnations) and F. P. Journe's Vagabondage, models II and III.? The Zeitwerk has also been a platform for striking complications, up to and including the minute repeater, a...
Hands-On: The Breguet Classique 5177 Grand Feu Blue Enamel
What is Breguet known for? For the majority of readers of this site, this question will probably bring a few answers to mind: Certainly, it's known for its eponymous founder, one the greatest watchmakers of all time and probably the single best known practitioner of the horological arts. It's also known for its classical designs, some of which have been adapted from historically interesting pocket watches in order to function as wristwatch designs. It's known for its complications C chief among them the tourbillon, which A.L Breguet himself invented. And it's known for its dials C most often of the hand guilloch type, made by artisans in-house in the Vall de Joux on antique rose engines. (...
Editor's Note: Since this article was first published we had the opportunity to see the supporting documents that detail this watch's creation and provenance. Check out an in-depth, exclusive look at those documents right here. While we've seen the concept of an auction catalog "cover lot" upended a bit over the last few years as online catalogs have supplanted the physical paper tomes for many collectors, we still see the big players each make a seasonal push to have one major talking point heading into each auction. For the upcoming Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: Nine, that watch is undoubtedly the Vacheron Constantin that you see here. So what is it exactly th...
Hands-On: The De Bethune DB28GS Grand Bleu
Among the many complexities and contractions that reside within my soul, witness my extreme fondness for De Bethune. While I will always extol the endearing nature of a simple steel sport watch or the usefulness and relatively good value of a 12-hour bezel, there is something about this brand that really gets me excited. With many of their designs being about the jaw-dropping experience of interacting with the actual watch in person, I'm not sure why I was so surprised when, at Baselworld earlier this year, I was handed the DB28GS Grand Bleu, the latest in water-resistant sport watch design from De Bethune.? The DB28GS Grand Bleu on my 7-inch wrist. ...
Business News: Brexit Stockpiling Skews Swiss Watch Export Growth
Swiss watch exports grew at a respectable 2.9% in value in the first quarter of 2019 to 5.13 billion Swiss francs. (The amount is the same in U.S. dollars.)But slap a giant asterisk on that figure. That's because exports to one country accounted for almost all of the first-quarter growth.?That country, surprisingly, was not one of Switzerland's Big Three watch markets. Au contraire, exports to #1 Hong Kong rose a piddly 0.1% in the January-March period. The next two top markets, USA and China, rose by 2.6% and 3.4%, respectively. No, Switzerland's monster market of 2019 so far is Great Britain, where exports jumped by an eye-popping 52%.?The reason, according to the Federation of the Swiss Wa...
Auctions: Christie's Brings The Loot At May's Geneva Rare Watches Auction
Those keeping a watchful eye on my byline (and perhaps my Instagram) will know that I have become somewhat obsessed with the sheer fun and bravado of gold watches, especially those in yellow gold and of the vintage persuasion. While my chances of ownership could be represented by a number rapidly approaching zero (there are so many cameras I'm yet to own), when given the chance to preview some of the highlight lots for Christie's upcoming Geneva Rare Watches Auction, you know I couldn't help but put together a list of my favorite gold options. From pocket watches given new life to two-tone numbers with pop provenance and some solid gold from the Crown, these are just a few picks from an impr...
Historical Perspectives: American Watches Gifted To Soviet Troops During The Dark Days Of WWII
Watches have long served as gifts given to mark important occasions. In the past it was standard practice to inscribe the caseback with a name or even a short note. From parents to children, wives to husbands, watches made a great gift because they were both personal and essential. Folks needed a watch to stay on time, and what better way to remember an occasion than to actually use the object tied to it? ?But in the early days of WWII, a batch of American watches were given as gifts to Soviet soldiers for a different sort of occasion: to help win a war. On December 14, 1941 former ambassador to the Soviet Union Joseph E. Davies ...

Auctions: Jones & Horan To Sell The Howard Davis & Dennison No. 3 Pocket Watch
In the mid-19th century, Americans changed the paradigm of watch manufacturing and repair by developing a system of interchangeable watch parts. This was the beginning of mass manufactured watches and the rest of the watchmaking industry soon followed America's lead. But where did it all start? Where are the original watches that started this manufacturing revolution? At their June 2, 2019, auction, Jones & Horan will offer the Howard Davis & Dennison #3 pocket watch, which is arguably the most important American watch ever seen at auction. Howard Davis & Dennison #3. Before this innovation, if a watchmaker receive...
