Introducing: The Apple Watch Series 5 (Live Pics & Pricing)
It's insane to think that it was five years ago this week that Apple released the very first Apple Watch (and Ben wrote about it here). Yesterday I made my now-annual trip out to Cupertino, California, for today's keynote event and the folks at the world's largest company didn't disappoint at all. In addition to lots of other goodies, Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 5, which runs watchOS 6 and brings a handful of important new updates to the table. Let's dig right into it. First up, the biggest news: The Apple Watch Series 5 has an always-on display! This is something people have been asking for since day one and it's finally here. The display automatically...
Recommended Reading: Artist Wes Lang's Monthly Watch Column In GQ
It isn't often that I meet someone new and am truly shocked by his or her interest in and knowledge about watches. That's not to say I don't meet seriously passionate people all the time C it's just that usually their passions are singular. For example, person X might just adore complicated Pateks, while person Y, only likes vintage Rolex. Person Z cares about high-end independents. There aren't many civilians that care about all of the above, plus some. And then there is Wes Lang.On a recent free day in LA, I reached out to the well-known artist after a suggestion from a mutual friend that I might enjoy meeting him. For those who don't know Wes's work, he's one of this country's eminent mod...
Introducing: The Bell & Ross BR05 Collection
Bell & Ross recently announced a new line of watches, which represent a combination of design attributes from several of its existing collections. We have the rounded-corner case shape of the BR01 collection, and the signature Arabic numerals found not only in the BR01 collection but in other Bell & Ross watches as well. The collection at launch consists of a single basic 40mm square case design, with a number of variations in terms of dial treatment and strap or integrated steel bracelet. There will also be a skeleton-dial version, as well as an 18k rose gold model, which can be had on either a black rubber strap, or an integrated rose gold bracelet.? We...
The Value Proposition: The Montblanc Heritage GMT
Every watch enthusiast has his or her favorite complication. Some people are obsessed with chronographs, others go nuts for calendars. For me, if I'm wearing something with more than three hands, it's going to be a travel complication of some kind. And, as far as those go, I'm a man of simple tastes: An easy-to-use GMT hand will serve me just fine, with or without an external bezel to add further utility. The watch we have here today is one of the cleaner, more straightforward GMT watches on the market today, and the fact that it comes in at just a hair over $3,000 on a mesh bracelet only adds to the appeal. The Montblanc Heritage GMT is just the kind of watch for which The Value Proposition...
Introducing: The NOMOS Metro 33 In Rose Gold
Today, NOMOS announced a new, rose gold version of its popular Metro watch. This is the smallest Metro watch so far, although it's not the first in gold; that honor goes to the the Metro Neomatik 39, which was introduced in 2017, as part of the At Work collection (see Stephen Pulvirent's coverage right here). Gold watches are a relative rarity from NOMOS, although they have experimented with the material before C most notably, in the Lux and Lambda watches, which launched all the way back in 2013, and which were larger than usual for NOMOS, and which, as well, featured movements with much more elaborate decoration than is usual for NOMOS.? ...
Introducing: The Tudor Black Bay Chrono Dark
Tudor has announced an all-black version of their Black Bay Chrono, produced as a limited edition in conjunction with the All Blacks (New Zealand's national rugby team) upcoming defense of their championship at the Rugby World Cup 2019. Following the naming scheme for Black Bay watches, this new model is called the Black Bay Chrono Dark. Tudor's not one to often dip into limited editions and for the Black Bay Chrono Dark, they've come up with an interesting change of pace C production will be limited to one unit for each player ever to have played for the All Blacks. As of this writing, that number sits at 1,181, with one watch added every time the team selects a new player.? ...
I don't know about you, but it seems to me that the finds are only getting better as we get closer to auction season being back in full swing. Save your pumpkin spice lattes C the seasonal delicacy I'm after is a crisp vintage watch of the most well-maintained variety. Supporting the aforementioned notion at the sportier end of the spectrum are watches like the Valjoux 72-powered Zodiac Sea Chron, along with the Ref. 2447 Solunar from Abercrombie & Fitch, and one of the best sleeper value plays on the market C an Omega Chronostop Driver. This week's hunting efforts also yielded a couple of noteworthy examples reflecting a certain smartness, including a rare Audemars Piguet in white gold,...
Business News: TAG Heuer Announces It Will Be Title And Timing Partner Of The Porsche Formula E Team
TAG Heuer and Porsche have just announced that moving forward, the two companies will partner in the still-niche but increasingly interesting world of Formula E racing. The move is a significant one for both companies. The entry of Porsche into Formula E racing is a fairly major step for the company, marking the first time it's produced an open-wheel race car since its attempt, in the 1980s, to manufacture its own IndyCar from scratch.? Newcomers to Formula 1 racing are often surprised to find that Porsche doesn't field an F1 car, but the company has been very active in WEC (World Endurance Championship) racing, where it ran its 919 Hybrid in the Le Mans Prototyp...
Introducing: The Linde Werdelin 3 Timer Rock And The 3 Timer Rock Gold (Live Pics & Pricing)
I know what you are thinking, what on earth has been going on over at Linde Werdelin? Well, truth is, times have been tough. We haven't covered Linde Werdelin in these pages for a while now. The reason? I found out last week.?From its inception in 2002, the brand went from grassroots to circa 600 doors in 2008 and 50 plus staff with lightning speed. The set up now is far leaner, having undergone some major structural changes.?Jorn Werdelin, one of the co-founders (Morten is no longer actively involved, but still a partner in the business) now manages around 10 personnel, many of whom are external freelancers from the London HQ. Jorn, to his credit, was hugely transparent when we met, saying,...
A Week On The Wrist: The Apple Watch Series 5 Edition In Titanium
September means a lot of things. The muggy New York summer is winding down. Watchmakers are coming back from their summer holidays. And it's new Apple Watch time. This is now the fifth year that I've made the annual pilgrimage out to Silicon Valley to be a part of the gaggle of reporters literally tripping over one another to be first to get their hands on Apples latest and greatest. For me though, the best part of this is the opportunity to check in and see how Apple is thinking about the Watch. It's important to remember that while Apple Watch is now five years old, it's still a relatively young product and one thats still maturing at a relatively quick clip. Each year doesn't just mean a...
Introducing: The Frederique Constant Yacht Timer Regatta Countdown
In 1997, Frederique Constant introduced a regatta timer for the first time (and until now, the only time) in its collections. The regatta timer may be one of the most specific, if not the most specific, of all complications. A regatta timer is used to count down the amount of time remaining before the competing yachts are allowed to cross the start line during a yacht race; the start line is defined by an imaginary line drawn between two buoys. Sailboats cannot, unlike race cars, simply wait at a starting line, as they are constantly in motion thanks to the wind. Instead, racing yachts maneuver behind the start line, seeking to correctly anticipate the moment that the starting signal is give...
Photo Report: The Watches And Wheels Of The 2019 Goodwood Revival Meeting
Goodwood Revival is a celebration meant to revive the spirit of the '50s and '60s. No other motoring event in the world has the same sort of charm, and you're certainly not going to see an entire herd of Ferrari 250 SWBs going neck and neck anywhere else. It's the only place where you'll witness an all-out battle on the track between cars like a monstrous '57 Thunderbird "Battlebird" and a cute '60s Alfa Romeo Giulietta racing as they would have in their heyday (and people dressed, as is required, in period-correct costume as well). ?It's also the perfect environment to geek out to just about anything mechanical. And as I learned, that certainly includes watches.? ...
In-Depth: The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Caliber 321 Platinum
Last July 20th, on the 50th anniversary of the first manned Moon landing, Omega announced the first watch that would be powered by the hand-wound chronograph caliber 321. The caliber 321 was the movement used in the first Speedmaster watches, and was also the mechanism that powered the Speedmasters worn by the Apollo crews. The last Speedmaster reference to use the caliber 321 was the 145.012, which was produced for a relatively short period of time (1967 through 1968, with a few pieces from 1969 as production wound down). That reference was used extensively in manned space flight, and from the first time the caliber 321 went into space, with Wally Schirra (who wore his 2998 aboard Mercury A...
Watch Spotting: The Watches Of English Premier League Managers
Usually when we post a Watch Spotting it's because we've spotted one interesting watch. Sometimes we even spot three interesting watches. But eight watches? That's got to be a first around here. However, anyone who watches soccer on a regular basis will know that basically every team manager and coach can be seen rocking serious wrist candy on their respective benches during matches. ?We decided to round up the best and most interesting among them, all in one place. This way you won't have to lean into your TV, squint, and wonder, "What's that?"If we missed your favorite manger and their watch, let us know in the comments below and maybe we'll do a second installment. Enjoy! ...
Editorial: Odell Beckham Jr. And Daniel Wellington Might Have Just Played Us All
Sorry fam, I think we all got played this week. Yep, you, me, basically anyone reading this.?You may remember a little less than two weeks ago, during the first Sunday of the 2019-2020 NFL football season, we wrote this little story about wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. wearing a Richard Mille RM 11-03 McLaren during his first game with the Cleveland Browns. Beckham had been spotted wearing the watch before, during the team's training camp and earlier, and it pretty perfectly matches his new team's colors. When he decided to rock it during the game, we took notice C?and so did the rest of the internet and the NFL itself. It was a relatively simple thing. Okay, th...
Photo Report: Speedmasters Galore As Speedy Tuesday Takes NYC
Last week, our friends at Fratello Watches hosted a Speedy Tuesday extravaganza in New York City with a very special guest. Astronaut Terry Virts piloted shuttle mission STS-130 in addition to a 2014 Soyuz mission to the International Space Station C and spent a total 213 days in space over the two missions. For a room full of ?die-hard Speedmaster fans, the most interesting people on earth are the ones who have left it and returned.? Astronauts often report experiencing the "overview effect" when seeing earth from space. It's a certain type of awareness of the fragile nature of our planet, and a clarity that can only be achieved when one sees the earth in its en...
Doing as they are wont to do, Richard Mille has announced a new partnership with Finnish racing legend Kimi Ra?ikko?nen. Included in this announcement is a new limited edition watch, the Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph Kimi Ra?ikko?nen (aka the RM 50-04). It is, as you would expect, a watch befitting a robotic superhuman driver still chasing the podium in the most technologically advanced racing series on earth. A dizzying mix of advanced materials, complex engineering and cutting-edge watchmaking, the RM 50-04 is just so very Richard Mille. And you know it has the price tag to match.? With a pale white/cream 44.5mm case rendered in a mix of Carbon TPT and Q...
Bring a Loupe: A Juvenia Arithmo, An Angelus Cal. 215, And A Universal Geneve Compax
The summer is nearing its official end, and while the blue skies and warm weather might be departing for some, the vintage watch finds aren't going anywhere any time soon. Should you need proof, just take a gander at what surfaced this week, including a tonneau-shaped Jaeger-LeCoultre, along with a Favre Leuba that mimics a famed JLC design, and an oversized Compax from Universal Geneve. If razor sharp and ultra clean is what you're after, we've got you covered too, with a large logo Cal. 215 chronograph from Angelus, and the always compelling Juvenia Arithmo. Without further ado, here's your selection of finds for the week.? Favre Leuba Sandow ...
Subscribe to the show: (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, TuneIn). Already heard it once or twice? Please leave a short review here, and tell us which guests we should have on! Wow has it been a week. We've seen the latest generation of Apple Watch, we dropped an awesome episode of Talking Watches with actor Daniel Dae Kim, and Omega started letting people see the new 321-powered Speedmaster in the metal. But somehow none of these stories has come anywhere close to grabbing headlines like the tale of NFL wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the (sometimes fake) watches on his wrist. You can read my full thoughts on the controversy here...
Hands-On: The Ming 17.06 Copper
In August of 2017, Ming launched its first watch, which was the Ming 17.01, and which immediately captured the attention of watch enthusiasts with its remarkable value offering, idiosyncratic and immediately recognizable design, and exceptionally beautiful dials that gave the watches great visual depth and appeal. The company was and is the brainchild of Ming Thein, whom I first got to know when he and I both frequented ThePuristS.com in the very early 2000s.? It was clear even then that he was a person who did not do things by halves. While there were many of us then (and now) who describe ourselves as devoted enthusiasts, it was obvious from the start that Ming...
