Among other "year of" proclamations, this is shaping to be the year of the Chronomaster Revival from Zenith. Earlier this year, we saw the release of both the Chronomaster Revival Shadow as well as the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition. Well, today, Zenith is releasing yet another entrant into the Revival space, with the Zenith Chronomaster Revival Liberty. In terms of design, this is far more similar to the Revival Shadow, and in terms of colorway, it shares some similarities with the Manufacture Edition. What makes this watch special, however, is that it is a limited edition exclusive to the North American market, which explains the Liberty naming convention. More than that, this wa...

Hey guys, Ben here.?It's been a minute, I know. But I wanted to take a second today to share with you some changes C I believe all for the better C to how HODINKEE handles something that is near and dear to my heart, and the hearts of many of my colleagues here, and certainly you, our readers C vintage watches.? Vintage watches are at the very core of this company. They were, after my grandfather's Omega, my first love in mechanical watches, and in many ways, it was the schooling I learned studying vintage watches by myself for those many years that taught me to have the eye that I do in all forms of collecting. Beyond that, the community that surrounds vintage w...

The conversation touches on a lot, from the early days of online watch retail to how Rick's watch collection h...

Last year, Bell & Ross responded to the ongoing conversation around integrated bracelet stainless steel sports watches with the BR05. That watch channeled the classic Bell & Ross square-case motif lifted from the flight deck of French fighter jets into a package that was distinctly Bell & Ross, but also visually tied it to the integrated sport watches of the '70s with a squared-off bezel wrapped around a circular dial. Faux screws, reminiscent of popular watches in this category, are present on the bezel.? Now, Bell & Ross has included a chronograph function to that very watch. The standard BR05 has large Arabic n...

Imagine yourself in a pitch meeting. You're sitting in the offices of a mountain-themed watch brand that mostly specializes in pens. You know they want to create a limited edition watch with inspiration from the world of mountaineering, and all of the junior associates are assembled and champing at the bit. Pitches are being thrown around like gunfire and when the dust settles, the whiteboard is a mess of buzzwords and hopeful hallmarks. As rejection-stained paper is balled up all around you, a small voice from the back cuts through the haze, "What about Reinhold Messner?" Dead silence fills the room and one of the senior execs, a man who had cut his teeth in the US at the turn of the centur...

Turns out Bruce Springsteen wears a super cool Heuer Autavia ref. 1163, and on a bund strap no less. As spotted by the watch journalist Nick Gould, who goes by @niccoloy on Instagram, the Boss can be seen in the above photo rocking the classic C-shaped chronograph in a photo from the forthcoming Apple TV+ documentary, Bruce Springsteen's Letter To You, which begins streaming on Oct. 23.?Here's the trailer in case you haven't seen it yet (or in case you just want to get even more excited about it).? The film isn't out yet, but its release is pegged to Springsteen's latest studio album C his twentieth, in fact C which the Boss is d...

This week, we've got two awesome guests, and we're dedicating the entire show to my conversation with them. Last week, I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with Spencer Bailey and Andrew Zuckerman, the co-founders of The Slowdown, a new kind of media company that describes itself as making "short-form content with a long view." I've known these guys for quite a while (and even worked with Spencer back during our days at Surface Media) and have been a fan of wh...

Since its birth in 1960, Grand Seiko has been dedicated to perfecting the essentials of watchmaking. With the goal of making the "ideal watch," Grand Seiko strives to attain the ultimate in accuracy, legibility, durability, and beauty, and uses its resources and history of mechanical watchmaking to craft the best possible movements it can in quartz, its proprietary Spring Drive technology, and since the launch of the brand, finely adjusted, purely mechanical calibers. Grand Seiko 9SA5 Movement Kod is Japanese for heartbeat. At the November 2020 lecture of the Horological Society of New York, Joseph Kirk will cover Grand Seiko...

Editor's note: This article features a watch currently available in the HODINKEE Shop. The notion of a dress watch is an interesting one, inasmuch as dressing per se is something of a lost art, at least in terms of conventional business attire (and at least in the United States; folks I meet in corporate jobs with overseas companies still can, depending on the company, put on a suit and tie every day). The term probably means something a little different to everyone. A dress watch is not necessarily one meant to be worn with a formal dress code (white tie) or a semiformal dress code (tuxedo) as a watch, in the case of a formal dress code, is generally dispensed w...

I've always found the sunrise-sunset complication to be one of the most intellectually beautiful complications in horology C there is something about having the rhythms of celestial objects reproduced in miniature on the wrist that is irresistible. Sunrise-sunset complications have been used in clocks for centuries and can be found in pocket watches as well C the Patek Philippe Graves Supercomplication is one example, and, more recently, Vacheron Constantin's ref. 57260 is another (and it's also, lest we forget, the most complicated watch ever made, albeit at 76mm x 31mm, it pushes the notion of portability to its limit). However, it did not appear in a wristwatch until the introduction of t...

J.B Champion, Jr. was a lawyer, a family man, and an obsessive watch collector that had a special penchant for Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin C so much so that he operated in a space where unique pieces were possible and had his name on the dial. Know the Clapton-owned Patek 2499 that was auctioned in 2012? Well, it was the second-best lot at that sale as Christie's also happened to have a one-of-one platinum 2458 that said "Made especially for J.B. Champion" on the dial (among many other superlatives). But that's only one part of this fascinating story.? A remarkable man who would later be indicted for fraud by a grand j...

Back in August, Doxa announced that it was bringing back the SUB 300, and the impressions were, to put it simply, mixed. Those who know the brand know that a 2020 SUB 300 re-issue was never going to be something that the whole community was behind and, while it's absolutely a watch that Doxa should make as part of its standard line up, there were complications. You see, this is not the brand's first attempt to revive its beloved funky late '60s design.? Before I go further into this look at the latest SUB 300, I figure it's only fair to state openly that I am a huge fan of this general watch, be it the original "thin case" models...

For the horologically inclined, it is almost a reflex to identify the watches we see in movies or on television. For all of the "Watch Spotting" that we do, there is a Prop Master behind the choice of wrist hardware. A few months ago, I sat down with Ritchie Kremer, the Prop Master from Interstellar and Westworld. He talked about the crucial role that Prop Masters play, especially when it comes to watches on screen. Over time, I have spoken to various individuals in the film industry, from Nathan Crowley (Production Designer on Christopher Nolan's Tenet), to a key crew member in the props department on Casino Royale.? Most recently, I had a chance to speak with L...

We believe every vintage watch has a story to tell. That's what HODINKEE was founded on, and since 2016, we've used our knowledge to bring you a curated selection of vintage watches in the HODINKEE Shop that you won't find elsewhere, all delivered with an emphasis on education, transparency, and storytelling. And now, we're kicking things up a notch.? A Breitling Navitimer ref. 806 on its original mesh-style bracelet? Yup, we've got it this week. You'll still find us here every Wednesday morning, and we'll still be highlighting what we love and what you should know about every vintage watch that appears in the HODINKEE Shop. Y...

Late this past summer, H. Moser & Cie introduced the Streamliner Centre Seconds, a stainless steel, integrated bracelet timepiece inspired by 1930s locomotive design (Cole gave some great historical perspective to that design in his write-up). One of the standout features of that watch was the green fum dial. Well, green is back C and so is fum C on another timepiece from Moser, this time in the form of a collaboration with Collective Horology C a global community of watch enthusiasts established in California. This is the limited edition H. Moser & Cie Pioneer Centre Seconds Rotating Bezel C.02 for Collective, featuring a bi-directional travel bezel, screw-down crown, and of cours...

Of all of the moves that a watch brand may have at its disposal, the in-house movement is often treated like a sure thing. Within the perspective of the modern watchmaking era C we'll call it the last 15 years or so C in-house has become the prestige play. And what was once simply the most effective way of doing business has now become a sort of marketing power move to help distinguish one's brand in an ebauche-effusive marketplace.? Movement origin is important, sure, but it has also become a central tenet of the conversation surrounding luxury watchmaking. Remember when Panerai made the leap? What about TAG Heuer? Tudor? IWC? T...

Last night, to close out what surely has been the strangest season in baseball history, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 3-1, to clinch the 2020 World Series. If you tuned in, you probably noticed that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was sporting something of note on his wrist: what sure appears to be a Panerai Luminor Marina (PAM 422). The model, which was introduced back in 2011, features the P. 3001 caliber with hour, minutes, small seconds at 9 o'clock, and a three-day power reserve, all in a 47mm case with an open caseback. Sharp-eyed readers will recognize the PAM 422 from our Talking Watches episode with John Edelman. ...

The Breitling Chronomat line got a major re-boot last April, when the company launched a whole range of new models in a redesign that manages to look both closer to vintage watch designs, and at the same time, more modern than the standard Chronomat line C a thorough but respectful revision, which included more discreet rider tabs, and a very comfortable, and terrific-looking, rouleaux bracelet. At launch, the new Chronomat collection consisted of a range of 42mm chronometer-rated chronographs, and this week, Breitling announced that it would be launching two smaller time-and-date models as well. These are called, simply, the Chronomat 36mm and 32mm models, and Breitling's marketing them as ...

This week, you're getting a blast from the past: former HODINKEE editor and current specialist and head of digital at Phillips Watches, Arthur Touchot. Those of you who have been longtime HODINKEE readers will no doubt remember Arthur's name, as well as some of his benchmark HODINKEE stories (this Speedmaster review ring any bells?). Since arriving at Phillips in 2017, Arthur has led the auction house's efforts to pair their incredible auction offerings with beautif...
