Introducing: The Bulgari Diva's Dream Peacock Tourbillon Lumire
Bulgari's Diva series of watches stand out for a number of reasons, especially in the world of complicated watches produced for what the industry sometimes archly refers to as "the feminine client."?They're as design-forward as you'd expect from Bulgari, with graceful but strongly geometric lines, and they radiate opulence C as you might guess, Bulgari doesn't stint on gem quantity or quality in its high-end watches. And they're often showcases for some of fine watchmaking's most demanding decorative arts as well. On top of all that, they are, quite often, extraordinary timepieces from a watchmaking perspective C the 2018 Diva Finissima Minute Repeater is a great example C and for LVMH Watch...
Introducing: The Hublot Spirit Of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve In Carbon White
Billions of years ago, the universe was created in a rapid expansion from a single point of nearly infinite energy, known as the Big Bang. In 2005, Jean-Claude Biver created a watch that ushered in a new era for Hublot, also called the Big Bang. In the spirit of one of those two events, Hublot created the aptly named Spirit of Big Bang C a more avant-garde expression of the line, featuring a tonneau-shaped multi-layer case in a host of complications. Today, Hublot is announcing a new addition to that Spirit line: The Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon 5-Day Power Reserve in Carbon White. Initial Thoughts ...
Introducing: The Zenith Defy 21 Urban Jungle
Last year, Zenith defied the odds by releasing three new iterations of its Defy range. Well, new year, new Defy. Where 2020 brought standouts like the Zenith Defy 21 Ultraviolet, 2021 brings things a little more down to earth(tone) by way of the new Zenith Defy 21 Urban Jungle. This watch features a green ceramic case, green strap, and an open-work dial showcasing the very, very impressive El Primero 9004 automatic movement. While nothing about the watch is new in terms of the case design, movement, or even the strap, this piece does represent a first for the brand: It's the first time Zenith has hous...
Introducing: The Bulgari Diva's Dream Peacock Diamonds
The three Diva's Dream watches launched by Bulgari for LVMH Watch Week all look to the peacock for inspiration. But they express that inspiration in different ways, varying the emphasis on the concrete versus the abstract.?The Diva's Dream Peacock Dischi is the most concrete in that it incorporates the bird physically C the entire dial, except for the gemstones, is composed of peacock feather marquetry. There is, however, no attempt made to illustrate the bird. In the Diva's Dream Tourbillon Lumire, the peacock begins to emerge from the thicket of abstraction, but it's still present physically as well C the watch also makes use of feather marquetry, but to a lesser extent, and more as part ...
Introducing: The Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Magic Gold
For LVMH Watch Week 2021, Hublot introduces a new version of its Big Bang MP-11, a watch which features a 14-day power reserve via a series of seven in-series mainspring barrels. This is one of the longest power reserves in any watch produced by Hublot; it has previously been released in red ceramic. That model was the subject of a Hands-On review in June of 2020. The new version is in Hublot's Magic Gold, which is a proprietary alloy made of a combination of ceramic and gold. The new watch, like its predecessor, is a relatively restrained (for a 14-day watch) 45mm x 14.50mm, and retails for $89,500, in a limited edition of 50 pieces. ...
Although physical trade shows are a thing of the past, at least for now, watch brands have by no means given up on rolling out new products. The LVMH watch brands are kicking off the New Year with LVMH Watch Week, an online release of a number of new watches from Zenith, Hublot, and Bulgari. Notably, TAG Heuer will not be participating in LVMH Watch Week (we think it's safe to assume TAG will have its own product rollouts in the near future). This is not the first LVMH Watch Week C the first edition took place in Dubai, in January of 2020. That was relatively speaking a fairly small scale event, but thanks to the ongoing challenges in communications and travel, t...
Happenings: Kelly Yoch To Lecture At The Horological Society Of New York
The face of watch collecting has changed dramatically over the last few years. Brands have mimicked designs based on the success of their competitors, and attitudes have shifted towards attaining rather than collecting. Star factor, Instagram likes, and fast money have all become important in today's watch world. Auction houses are seeing record prices for watches that were considered basic not long ago, and some retailers have not been playing fairly. All of these factors determine how and why we shop for certain watches. So where does that leave us? At the February 2021 meeting of the Horological Society of New York, Kelly Yoch will discuss how we can get back to collecting what we love in...
Hands-On: The Casio Edifice ECB-10 Connected Watch, The Other CasiOak
I guess I ought to lead this off with an apology to Thomas Gray, who probably never thought his "Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard" would ever get hijacked for a watch story, but I feel like what you get a lot of in consumer journalism is irony. Anyway, in this case, the quote is apropos. Submitted for your consideration: The Casio Edifice ECB-10, a Bluetooth connected watch which is cheap, cheerful, surprisingly good looking on the wrist, and which looks enough like a Royal Oak to make you wonder why it hasn't become a cult classic like...well, like the CasiOak cult classic. The "CasiOak" Casio G-Shock GA2100-1A1. In case...

Some weeks, we look to offer a selection of vintage watches that's focused on a clear theme, while other times, the idea is to run the gamut. Consider this week firmly the latter approach. From Rolex, Cartier, and Patek to Favre-Leuba and Movado, the selection is broad while remaining curated. Say your watch box is full C in the group is a Heuer pocket watch chronograph, no need to fill a space in the box; we all have pockets somewhere. 1940s Heuer Single-Button Chronograph Pocket Watch 1970s Hamilton Chrono-Matic Fontai...
Introducing: The REC Watches P-51 Little Red and Green Hornet
The obvious synergies between horology and the automotive world have led to countless partnerships, co-branded watches, and timepieces with features engineered for racing around a Formula One circuit C or maybe just cruising through the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. Less frequently, one world physically subsumes the other and a car becomes a watch. That's what we've got today. You're looking at two-limited edition watches made with reclaimed metal from a pair of one-of-a-kind Shelby EXP500 prototypes: the 1968 Green Hornet and 1967 Little Red. The latter, long thought to be lost or destroyed, made a triumphant reappearance on the world stage earlier this mont...

In-Depth: Carl Brashear's Legacy Lives On
Like George Patton and Stormin' Norman, Carl Brashear is one of those military figures who has transcended the battlefield and become a mythic American figure. Alive from 1931 to 2006 and raised in Kentucky, he's probably best known as the Navy's first Black master deep-sea diver and the subject of Hollywood's Men of Honor. He lost half his leg in 1966 during the recovery of a B28 nuclear bomb that was lost off the coast of Palomares, Spain. After the accident, Brashear became the first-ever amputee diver to be recertified as a U.S. Navy diver. After that, he became an icon of military history.? Phillip Brashear in front of a CH-47, the U.S. Army's heav...
Business News: Watches & Wonders 2021 Unveils New Lineup And Schedule
This morning we woke up to news from Switzerland of how this young year's watch trade show schedule is developing.? As we reported back in November, Watches & Wonders Geneva, scheduled for April 7 to 13, 2021, will be a digital-only affair. Today's news offers more insight into what that show will look like and what brands will be showing. As we reported in November, the five "Rolexit" brands are on board for the 2021 Watches & Wonders Geneva digital show. As a reminder, these brands are Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Chopard, and Chanel. They will be joined by brands from the Richemont Group, as was also expected. However, the...
Introducing: The TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph
Watches have long drawn inspiration from motorsports, but the truth is that automotive partnerships seldom guarantee a spot on the sales podium. Many brands have tried C literally too many to list C and many such collaborations have either crashed and burned or simply gathered rust in display cases, outpaced by more widely relatable product. With this in mind, it's big news when a brand like TAG Heuer announces a new automotive partnership. But it's bigger still when the automotive entity in question is none other than German wnderbrand Porsche. That's right, TAG Heuer is teaming up with Porsche for a wide-ranging partnership th...
One To Watch: The Former Patek Watchmaker Who Took His Talents To Denmark
People are happier in Denmark. It's just a fact. So it stands to reason that a certain talented watchmaker, who earned his stripes at a blue-chip watch brand, decided to leave Geneva and hang a shingle at the town of Odense back in his home country. Christian Lass, 40, the man behind the eponymous watchmaking outfit, is now hard at work getting his new business off the ground. As you read this, he's finishing the first watch he fully conceived and designed C every nook and cranny, minus the wheels of the gear train (but whos counting).? Lass isn't trying to create the next Patek. Instead, he's quietly and methodically crafting classically styled time-only watche...

In-Depth: An Exquisite Grand Seiko With The World's Most Beautiful Spring-Drive Movement
The first Grand Seiko, which was released in 1960, used the caliber 3180 movement, which for enthusiasts has become synonymous with the watch itself. Though Grand Seiko cases exist in a wide range of designs, the classic contour of the 3180 (also sometimes called the "First") has proven irresistible to both Grand Seiko and to enthusiasts and collectors, and has been used, over the past 20 years, in quite a few limited editions, as well as in regular production models. The first of the new breed debuted in 2001: SBGW004, which was a Japan-only watch, and this was followed by limited editions in 2013, 2017, and 2020, as well as regular production models.? ...
Culture Of Time: New York's Newest Public Clock Is A Triumph
New York's Penn Station is synonymous with poor design. Low ceilings. A general feeling of dread. The city's major rail hub exists, in its current incarnation, almost as an afterthought, buried beneath a basketball arena that doubles as a hockey rink. But it wasn't always thus.? Before its demolition in the 1960s, the old Penn Station was one of the country's grand public places, connecting New York to America. The recent opening of the new Moynihan Train Hall, across 8th Avenue from Madison Square Garden, represents a renewal C for the neighborhood, for the city, and for the memory of the old Penn Station.? At the center of the Moyni...
