Hello from cloudy Cupertino, California! 2025 marks eleven years of the Apple Watch, which means eleven years of Hodinkee on the ground at the brand's yearly launch event, where the newest generation of iPhone and Apple Watch gets unveiled, and eleven years of faithful readers debating in the comments whether or not these can be called watches. This year's teaser hinted at something "awe-dropping," and now the newest products are finally live. Yes, this includes new generations of iPhone and AirPods, but we're here for the Apple Watch. Last year brought a significant update in terms of proportions for the tenth-anniversary Apple Watch ...

Collaborations in the watch industry have become so commonplace and expected that it's truly surprising when a new pairing can excite, educate, and delight. Yet, in teaming with the Swiss company USM Modular Furniture for a new limited-edition series of colorful El Primero chronographs that ship with a piece of original USM storage, Zenith has managed to deliver on all three frontsand then some. There are a lot of firsts in this collaboration. It's the first time that USM, a family-owned Swiss company founded way back in 1885, has worked with a brand to incorporate its design sensibilities from its flagship Haller line of furnit...

For Geneva Watch Days, TAG Heuer has just unveiled a new bit of watchmaking technology that the brand says will be revolutionary for the future of mechanical watchmaking. This new tech, dubbed the TH-Carbonspring, was developed in-house at the TAG Heuer Lab. It is essentially a carbon oscillator designed to improve upon past designs by leveraging carbon's properties to deliver several promised benefits.? Launched within the recognizable forms of two of the brand's best-known models, the Monaco and the Carrera, the TH-Carbonspring is a carbon hairspring that is covered by a total of four patents, one of which has already been gran...

The Bulgari Aluminium is a stalwart in the Italian jewelry maker's collection of Swiss-made watches. Inspired by the 'Bulgari Bulgari' from 1975, and worn memorably by way of a Diagono quartz-powered chronograph iteration by Al Pacino in 'Heat,' the Aluminium was born in 1998 and reintroduced in 2020 in a mechanical version that served to add variety and approachability to the company's watch offerings while retaining the not-so-subtle double branding on the bezel. For 2025, a pair of new models in bronze aim to bring a fresh take to the sport watch line, with a metal that evolves and changes with the wearer over time. Both model...

A. Lange & Sohne has been on an absolute tear this year. The year after a big anniversary year, like last year with the double-feature that was Lange's 30th birthday and the Datograph's 25th, is never an easy act to follow. This year, the team over in Glashtte has been cooking up something across every product category in response from an Odysseus in Honeygold, to compact 34mm Saxonias, to a subtle new case metal for the Zeitwerk date. A little bit across every shape and size. But there's one department that seems to be working in full force this year, and that's the enameling workshop. At Watches and Wonders back in April, the star of the Lange booth, cer...

Just last month, I wrote in my introduction of the first Mission To Earthphase Moonshine Gold that it was fifteen months since we saw Snoopy-themed MoonSwatches introduced to the world. But now, it looks like after those fifteen months, Swatch might be letting these Snoopy designs flow. Ok, I'm exaggerating a bit here, mostly because this new MoonSwatch isn't another new Snoopy design. In fact, it's actually almost identical compared to last month's version. The only difference on this one is a new popcorn motif on one of the Moonshine Gold-...

The Hamilton Khaki Field needs little introduction. A staple (and icon) of the field watch category, it's safe to say that many collectors have owned one at some point in their lives. Hamilton is right to keep the classics largely as they originally were, while experimenting on the sidelines with a few versions of the Khaki Field that try something new. Today, we get another one of these experiments, with the Khaki Field Power Reserve. Yes, it's all in the name this is a Khaki Field with, well, a power reserve on the dial. As such, it's a ...

September is starting strong for fans of A. Lange & Sohne, as the brand has launched a pair of new limited edition models today, including the fourth outing of the seconds-obsessed Richard Lange Jumping Seconds. This new variant retains the technical chops that make the model such a special watch, while offering a brand new combination of a white gold case and a don't-call-it-salmon pink gold dial.? For those of you not ticking in step with the deadbeat seconds of the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds, here is a brief history with plenty of links to keep you reading. The original reference, 252.025, was launched in 2016 with a pl...

Since its release in 2001, the Ulysse Nardin Freak has been pushing boundaries in both design and engineering. At this year's Geneva Watch Days, the brand proves that haute horlogerie and "high-tech decorative arts", as the brand calls it, are natural neighbors with the introduction of the Freak [X Crystalium]. The focal point of this release is Crystalium, Ulysse Nardin's proprietary material that starts with rutheniuma platinum-group metal that's 10 times rarer than platinum. Over several days, this metal undergoes a controlled vapor-deposition crystallization process, similar to how frost forms on glass. The result is natural...

There's something big going on over at Trilobe. The French brand has released what is probably the most significant shakeup for the brand in recent memory, with the new Trente-Deux, an integrated bracelet sports watch that features one of the brand's signature dials. Time is still told on a display with an aperture for the minutes, a subdial for the running seconds, and a peripheral hour display where the hour disc rotates to line up with the pointer at 12 o'clock. The case and what's inside it are both completely new. The first thing you might notice is that the Trente-Deux has an integrated bracelet, a first for the brand. Actu...

We've long been fans of Ressence at Hodinkee, thanks to their unusual domed dials with interesting displays, and their creative approach to the use of magnets, ball bearings, and other uncommon technical approaches that together make for a watch that looks completely unlike anything else on the market. Leave it to the fan of classic design The Armoury's founder, Mark Cho to bring in an extremely classic design cue by adding a high-polish fluted titanium bezel to Ressence's smallest watch ever. The Ressence Type 9 features a case measurin...

We're still playing catch-up to a whole bevy of launches during last weekend's Geneva Watch Days. It was a great show, and while attending meetings with my colleagues, Andy Hoffman and our Director of Limited Editions, Jeff Hilliard, another watch that really caught our eye was the new Classics Premire from Frederique Constant. Frankly, it was a watch that I had kind of forgotten existed, as the previous version (with black Roman numerals on a white dial) never really appealed to me. These new versions, however, offer a broader and more interesting appeal. The watches, avai...

Announced last week during Geneva Watch Days, Citizen has expanded its popular Tsuyosa collection with three new models launching this fall. Named after the Japanese word for "strength," the Tsuyosa line is the brand's colorful and value-driven offering in the integrated bracelet format that has been so popular for the past few years. These latest additions pack a Citizen automatic movement with 60 hours of power reserve and a trio of colorways offering black, green, or blue dials in either steel, two-tone, or rose gold-tone, respectively.? ...

The Patek Philippe Star Caliber 2000 is a little-discussed yet incredibly important pocket watch from the dawn of the millennium. Featuring 21 complications and 1,118 intricately finished components, it was produced in a limited number of examples and, at the time, it was the fourth most complicated watch in the world (behind, in order, the Patek Caliber 89, the L. Leroy 01, and the Patek Henry Graves Super Complication).?Like many pocket watches and watches with such exorbitant price tags, the 20 examples of the Star Caliber 2000 found homes in important but private collections, and only one has ever resurfaced. That makes the upcoming Sotheby's December sale in Abu Dhabi particularly inter...

Launched in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, Geneva Watch Days was Jean-Christophe Babin's radical answer to Baselworld's collapsepart necessity, part rebellion. What began as an agile, open-air gathering putting independents in the spotlight has grown into the watch world's own Milan Design Week. Hotels, boutiques, and lakeside galleries become stages, and the city itself transforms into a showcase for a traditional industry that needs to pivot in the face of challenging times. Now in its fifth year, the roster has swelled. Alongside the founding brands, which include Bulgari, Breitling, and MB&F, big-brand newcomers like TAG Heuer shared the limelight with daring independents like S...

Nicholas Foulkes, the London-based writer and one of the foremost authorities on watches in the world, is back with the second in a series of books exploring Rolex's most iconic watches. Swiss watchmaker Rolex has partnered with global design authority Wallpaper* to publish the first authorized history of the Datejust, a long-awaited follow-up to Foulkes's exploration of the Submariner, released in October 2024. Oyster Perpetual Datejust A Watch that Made History will be released on September 29, and it will be available in both English and French. The lore of the Datejust has been celebrated on the pages of Hodinkee from our i...

Edouard Meylan, the Swiss head and CEO of H. Moser & Cie, doesn't mince words when asked to grade the success of the watch industry and Swiss government's diplomacy efforts so far in negotiating a trade deal with the United States.? "It sucks,'' he says. "They were very naive. I can't believe the way our government went for it.'' Edouard Meylan of H. Moser & Cie. Photo by Mark Kauzlarich The 39% levy imposed on Swiss goods imported into the U.S., the top market for Swiss timepieces, has forced the industry to react. Moser, like many others, moved to ship as much stock as it could to U.S. re...

Regardless of their growing success in the watch community, Fears is a brand that more people should be talking about, myself included. By that, I mean that they deserve all the praise they get and more. A true heritage brand that is still under the management of the original founding family (sixth generation in fact), it has not had an uninterrupted lineage. Still, it does have a genuine feel behind it. Part of that is obviously thanks to Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, the fourth Managing Director of the company. Another part I'd credit to designer Lee Yuen-Rapati, whom I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel with at IAMWATCH in Singapore last year and, frankly, didn't give enough of a shout-o...

Grand Seiko just quietly released two new variations of existing models. No pomp, no circumstance, just posting them on the website. While both look like solid releases, I'm going to start with the one that is far and away my favorite, the SLGW007. This is the first new variation of the SLWG003 released at last year's Watches & Wonders. While that watch featured a signature "white birch" dial, Grand Seiko has gone for a darker blue tone with the same birch pattern for a dramatic new look that the brand calls Midnight Birch. The watch features the manually-wound 9SA4 movement with 80 hours of power reserve and a high-beat ba...
