Photo Report: Inside Bremont's New London Boutique
Bremont at 29 South Audley Street, London Quintessentially British brand Bremont has a new boutique just off London's Mount Street, which just opened in July 2012. They invited us over to take a look and share a drink with the team and a few collectors. The shop fits the brand perfectly, and here's a look at what we saw.?The first thing you notice when you walk in the front door is a vintage motorcycle. It's the real deal, not a prop - there's a drip pan actually catching oil sitting underneath the thing. The whole boutique is like this - instead of aviation, diving, and motorsports inspired decorations, they've brought in real pieces to fill the store. A floodligh...
Saying a new Patek Philippe reference is impressive is sort of redundant in itself. But the 5204 is really impressive. It's a new perpetual calendar with split-seconds chronograph for Patek, replacing the 5004 in the lineup, and offering a number of significant improvements. We got our hands on one back at Basel 2012 and have all the details. We'll start with the most basic differences. First, Patek has chosen to up the case size from 36.7 to an even 40 millimeters in keeping with the modern trend for larger watches. It's a huge jump, but 40mm is still a more than reasonable size and looks quite good here. Currently the 5204 i...
The Watch I Wore The Most In 2014, By Every Single Member Of The HODINKEE Team
Members of the HODINKEE team are often asked about our personal watch buying and wearing habits. That's understandable C we spend our days around incredible watches, both old and new, and most of us have dedicated not only our careers but also our lives to understanding and appreciating these timepieces. This year, we continue our annual tradition of sharing our watch-wearing habits of the past 12 months. We asked every member of the HODINKEE team, from Kelly, to Blake, to Eric and Will, to Felix and Jason, to Evald, to Paul, to Ben and John Mayer, which watch, out of all the watches they've worn in 2014, they spent the most time with. The answers will tell you a lot about who we all are as ...
This past weekend, team HODINKEE spent two days at the Goodwood Revival, the largest assembling of fine vintage automobiles on planet earth. ?The Revival is unlike any other event in the world in that A) unlike Pebble Beach, the Geneva, and NY auto shows, there is little influence from modern car makers, and as such, there isn't so much gloss. And B) attendees and participants are very much encouraged to dress the part - meaning period clothing and accessories. To us, what does that mean? You guessed it, some absolutely epic watch spotting. Here you will see some of our favorite outfits and watches of Goodwood 2012. We'll be back later this week with a very special celebrity watch-spot from...
Letters To The Editor: HODINKEE Guide to Watch Employment
Q. Gentleman, I am an avid follower of Hodinkee and a serious watch enthusiast. I am graduating law school from Southern Methodist University in May of this coming year. I was wondering if you could perhaps shed some light on attempting to work in the industry (in a position that utilized my J.D. or not). I maybe wrong but the watch community seems to be small and most individuals know other individuals with the shared passion. Seeing as I don't know many other individuals who share my passion, I thought I would ask you, the only real access to the world of higher end time pieces. I appreciate any help you may be able to offer me. - Thomas D.A. The profe...
The Greubel Forsey EWT: A Watch The World Never Knew The dream for any serious watch collector is to own something that no one else can own - and the appeal of unique and prototype pieces isn't more rampant anywhere than it is with the finest watches in the world.? So imagine our surprise yesterday, while visiting the excellent London-based retailer Marcus, when we were shown a watch that, quite frankly, we had no idea existed! And it was made by ber-manufacture Greubel Forsey! And it did NOT have a tourbillon!Wait, what?? Isn't the WHOLE POINT of Greubel Forsey the art and invention of an ultra-modern tourbillon?? It is, but the watch you see here is a watch that...
Introducing The Frederique Constant Slimline Tourbillon Manufacture (Specs & Pricing)
Frederique Constant have been popping up on the horological radar with greater frequency in the last year or so, most memorably with their very competitively priced Classics Manufacture range (which we love), and their bang-on trend Slimline collection.?Their newest offering extends the Slimline collection and kicks it up a notch by adding a tourbillon. The Slimline Tourbillon Manufacture demonstrates a very tasteful display of the tourbillon. Frederique Constant are well known for their 'Open Heart' watches, they do them well, and this is no exception.?The titular movement is a 60 second tourbillon, the cage at six also operates as the watches second hand. The manufacture movement also feat...
Introducing: The Urwerk UR-210 'Maltese Falcon'
Most of horology's great complications - split-seconds chronographs, perpetual calendars, tourbillons, etc. - were dreamed up in the candle-lit workshops of the nineteenth century. It's not too often that we get something truly new. But with the UR-210, the brilliantly-mad scientists at Urwerk have done just that and are giving us a world-first winding efficiency indicator. Urwerk is best known for their now-iconic satellite system, with spinning hour indicators integrated into a retrograde minutes display. This architecture is still there in the UR-210, but amped up a little. The minute hand is a three-dimensional cage inspired ...
Watch Spotting: Andy Murray Wearing A Rado D-STAR 200 After Winning The US Open
Tennis and watches - watch and tennis. Yesterday evening, we finally got to see something besides an AP, Rolex, or Richard Mille being raised alongside the trophy for a Grand Slam tennis event. Scottish-born Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in an epic five hour battle for his very first Grand Slam singles title, and in doing so made the people at Rado and the Swatch group very, very happy. Congrats to Andy and everyone at Rado. And in case you missed it, Stephen went hands-on with Murray's D-Star 200 just a few weeks ago....

NPR's All Things Considered Pays Tribute The Last Of The 'Radium Girls'
Radium is, as we all know, the luminous material that makes those early gilt dial vintage watches so beautiful. It is, of course, also quite poisonous. Now, it takes a lot of radium exposure for it to become troublesome, but imagine being exposed to enough exposed radium to paint twelve numbers on a watch, at a pace of 200 watches per day, for an entire career. Oh, and imagine being told by your superior that they recommend you sharpen your radium paint brush with your mouth between each watch, causing you to swallow a small dose of radium every day. That is exactly what it was like for "the radium girls," those young women who were employed by the US Radium Corporation after the first World...
The watch on the left is the awesome Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth chronograph, a watch we reviewed in detail here and absolutely loved (sidenote, if you've never seen one of these in action, you have to watch the video here).? The watch at right looks a lot like the 2010 Striking Tenth, doesn't it? It should, because it's the reference from which it was birthed.?You see, the Striking Tenth borrowed its tri-color dial from the original El Primero chronograph from 1969 - reference A386.? This early automatic chronograph (some would say it's the first self-winding chronograph, some would say the first high-beat self-winding chronograph, and others, the first self-winding integrated chronogr...
Perrelet has put a new spin on their signature turbine with the Peripheral Double Rotor - and this time it's all in-house. The Peripheral Double Rotor is the first collection featuring the new Alternance 10 (A10) caliber, and here is a closer look at what this means in both the short and long term for Perrelet. Looking at the Peripheral Double Rotor, the first thing you'll notice is that the turbine feature is much more subtle than in previous Perrelet models. Cut-outs around the hour markers allow slivers of the name-sake turbine peripheral rotor to show through. This is the upper rotor, but there is also a lower rotor (henc...
It could be said that the end game of watch collecting is, quite objectively, vintage Patek Philippe wristwatches. It is this narrow niche of high-collecting that regularly sets records at auction C with rare perpetual calendars, chronographs, and world-timers selling for hundreds of thousand of dollars, and often into the $1,000,000 plus range. ?Typically, the only place to see watches such as these - you know, the famous reference 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph (the first of its kind), the later 2499 (a case for which could be made as the most perfectly balanced watch ever made), the neo-classic 3970, and the ultimate modern watch, the 5970 - would be at auction. ?Sotheby's, Christie'...
Today, in this quick post-Christmas What's Selling Where, we are bringing you five watches available from dealers and eBay, including an Eberhard, Heuer, Longines, and Juvenia. Oh, and probably the nicest gilt Submariner we have ever seen. Like ever. Eberhard Chronograph These Pre-Extra-Fort Eberhard chronographs have dramatically increased in interest and value. This one is a particularly great example. From the crown to the glass crystal, it appears all original and unpolished. These are particularly wearable chronographs as they are almost 40mm in diamete...
Vintage inspired, finely made, and extremely stylish - the just announced Cloutier sunglasses from Silver Lining Opticians and Lee Allen Eyewear.Great glasses, like most great things, starts with top-quality materials. Most brands today are producing eyewear in huge quantities and care more about trendy looks than quality construction. Silver Lining, owned by Jordan Silver and Erik Sacher, carries mostly vintage and their own hand-made frames for this reason. Nothing from the big conglomerates; just the highest quality shades made with an eye for detail. The Cloutier actually started as a vintage frame, which Jordan and Erik sour...
Hands-On: With The Harry Winston Opus Twelve C A New Take on Tradition (Live Pics & Video)
Harry Winston's Opus series has become one of the real icons of modern haute horology. Every year the Opus shows us that time can be measured and displayed in ways we have never before envisioned. And the Opus Twelve is no exception. We've shown you previous Opus models, like the Opus Eleven (a collaboration with MCT founder Denis Giguet) and Opus Five (a partnership between then Winston creative head Max Busser - now of MB&F - and the boys from Urwerk), but now it's time to talk the latest and greatest. The Opus Twelve was launched this year at Basel World, and carries the same creative DNA, using uncommon geometry, but with a clearer nod to traditional watches than ?Opus Five or Eleven. ...
Hands-On: With The TAG Heuer MikrotourbillonS (Live Pics & Video)
TAG Heuer loves pushing the limits of timekeeping, as evidenced by their entire line of high-performance, highly-accurate Mikro chronographs (including Mikrograph, Monaco Mikrograph, Mikrotimer, and Mikrogirder). But the real pice de rsistance is the MikrotourbillonS. It houses two completely independent tourbillons, and as if that weren't enough, one of them powers a chronograph accurate to 1/100th of a second. TAG Heuer isn't holding anything back here. Everything about this watch is designed to push fine-grained timekeeping to the limits, but funnily enough through the utilization of what might be the least technically-advan...

There are watches and then there are watches. This, dear readers, is as real as it gets. You see, this is the world's first live look at what is surely one of the most collectible watches of 2012 (even though it is not yet being delivered) C the forthcoming George Daniels 35th Anniversary Co-Axial wristwatch. We showed you a very quick look at an early, non-working model of the watch back in November, but recently, we were given the exclusive chance to see a working prototype, and we naturally recorded it for you. So ?what is the Daniels anniversary watch? Well, according to Daniels ?protegee and heir-apparent Roger Smith, it is ...
