MB&F isn't going to be releasing a new watch this month.? Instead, we see the official opening of the very first M.A.D. Gallery, a concept store under the MB&F umbrella in the heart of Geneva.? But, MB&F only makes around 150 watches per year, so how could they fill an entire store with them?? Well, the thing is, they can't, and they wouldn't want to anyways.? The MAD Gallery is about finding friends who believe in the same sense of design as MB&F, and giving them a place to share the spotlight with the MB&F Machines.? Don't really understand? We don't talk about watch winders much here at HODINKEE. But for collectors, winders are the unsung heroes, keeping our watches at the ready so you can grab and go, whether it's your Seiko diver or your AP Royal Oak.The range in quality of watch winders is vast.? If you're not paying real money for a winder, you will be sorely disappointed in the results.? With winders, as with watches, it is a far safer move to save up and purchase a product of considerable quality that will perform to your standards and last a lifetime rather than simply buy the cheapest that crosses your path. One particular winder that caught our eye is the Rapport London F3 - a sleek machine of all aluminum, beveled glas...

To celebrate spring time in NYC, here is a photograph of a classic watch that might just be one of the best values in vintage chronographs. The Heuer Camaro is a simple, cushon-shaped watch that was sold for only a short period in the late 1960s and early 70s, and is one of the few Heuer chronos that never saw an automatic variation. The Camaro was, after all, Jack Heuer's attempt to capture some of the American muscle car market (why he made the watch cushion shaped, small, and rather elegant, we'll never know), but the watch did come in a variety of configurations. Included were Camaros with both black and white dials, and panda dials. With the two register models you'd see Valjoux 7730...

2011 may be the year of the Reverso made its grand re-entrance into the realms of mega-desirability, but to some people out there, a modern watch that looks vintage just isn't good enough - they want the real deal.? Luckily, Antiquorum, with support from JLC, has uncovered 30 authentic vintage Reversos and will be auctioning them off in the coming weeks in Geneva.?In this sale are several original designs, the same that JLC used when creating the Tribute To 1931 Reverso this year.? Others include original caseback engravings from such things as the King's Royal Rifle Corps.? One of the highlights, though, is the watch pictured below.? It is an original Reverso from 1931 with a bright red lac...

Nooka is one of my favorite watch companies, despite the fact they only make digital watches.? We took you inside their NYC lab here, and reviewed their Zirc here.? Now, founder and chief creative officer Matthew Waldman has launched an initiative to build the brand's first ever wall clocks, and he's asking for your help.?Nooka is indeed a self-funded startup, and through the just launched crowd-funding site CKIE, he hopes to raise enough money to build clocks using the brand's instantly recognizable facades. Those who do donate will have their names engraved on the back of the clocks, among several other incentives to participate.? While most of the civilized world waited to see whose dress Kate Middleton wore during the Royal wedding earlier today, we in the watch world were curious to know just what type of timepiece the future King of England would be wearing....and now we know.Prince William wore an Omega Seamaster Professional during today's ceremony.? He has been known to wear this watch for years, and it is believed to have been a gift from his mother.? While no official wedding pictures have been released showing the watch on his wrist, announcers did make mention of the piece during the ceremony.?With James Bond wearing a Seamaster Pro and now Prince William, Omega seems to have a solid grasp on the British me...

Earlier this year, we brought you a preview of 3 vintage racing inspired chronographs from Frederique Constant. These new releases coincided with the historic, Peking to Paris motor race, and boasted a decorated rotor to prove it. At this years Basel World, we had the chance to get up close and personal with all three of these throwback chronographs.?First impressions were strong, staying true to the handsome press images we first showed you in February. Fit and finish was commendable for a watch that will list well under $3,000, complemented nicely by subtle details in the dial and surfaces. The large sub-dials are emphasized by otherwise sterile dials, lending authenticity to their vintage...

Whether it is the Submariner for Rolex, Speedmaster for Omega, Flying Officer for Gallet or Monaco for Heuer, certain brands will always have one model that is most identifiable, and associated with them. For Longines that watch is probably the Longines Lindbergh, a watch designed by Charles Lindbergh for the functional purposes of aviation. It's the 80th anniversary of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso - and if you didn't know that, you've never read HODINKEE before. We've showed you the Tribute to 1931 and the US-only limited edition tribute to 1931.? Today we are back with another LE, this time for the Italian market, and this time using the tradtional, modern dial, but with a twist.Italy played a large role in the success of the modern-day Reverso, as it was the Italian distributor of JLC who rediscovered the Reverso cases in the Jaeger factory and who originally suggested the brand re-launch the model line in the late 1970s.This special Grande Reverso Ultra Thin has the letter "R" with "Reverso" spelled out in the stem where the...

Watches and cars - they go together like 80s power metal and big hair. Perhaps its the overarching appeal of finely crafted mechanical objects in a world overwhelmingly geared towards the disposable and the electronic, or maybe its just boys and their toys. Whatever it is, its a winning combination.?The big marques of watchmaking are well known for their automotive legacies, if only because their marketing departments make sure well never forget. ?And while the Heuers and Rolexes of the world command the big bucks and most of the attention, its important to remember that in the heyday of mechanical timekeeping there was a vast plethora of brands that have long since disappeared. Some of...

The Histoire de Tourbillon 2 from Harry Winston costs almost three times the price of the Opus Eleven, and it is far more rare.? This 48.5mm bi-axial flying tourbillon is an extraordinary piece of haute horology, one that further proves this brand has what it takes to compete against the established players in the world of complications.? We got the chance to play the Histoire de Tourbillon 2 in the room above Winston's 5th avenue boutique, a room once occupied by Harry Winston's personal office.? The result were the following photographs of one hell of a cool watch.?The follow-up act to 2009's Histoire de Tourbillon, this flying tourbillon features a titanium cage with an outer rotation of ...

Historically, few workplaces are more dangerous than the sea. ?Thus, in preceding centuries it has often been on the waves where men ?have entered the pantheon of heroes, risking death to save the life of another with no regard to country, culture or language.??In a spirit of awe and gratitude to those brave souls, Presidents in the 19th century, typically upon the recommendation of the Secretary of State, would officially recognize foreigners that through an extraordinary act of courage saved the life of an American at sea. According to the National Archives, the reward was typically a finely engraved gold pocket watch or a set of binoculars, a gift on behalf of a grateful nation. Typically...

Rollie Fingers and Peppermint Patty: Rolex and Patek Philippe never expected to be mentioned in the same sentence as these two American icons.I once visited a certain American city (located somewhere between NYC and LA) where ?the local watch community had developed some interesting names for their beloved watch brands. Both the salespeople and the customers collectively referred to Patek Philippe timepieces as 'Patties' and Rolex watches as 'Rollies'. I normally would have immediately left the premise, but was pleasantly surprised by the great selection of watches to be foundBut it did make me wonder if there should be an audio archive of the correct pronunciation of watch brands for all o...

George Daniels is a living legend, simply put. But in his entire career he's only built 37 watches (not including prototypes). His physical output may be minimal, but his contribution to the art of horology is expansive. A reporter for the Independent in the UK went to the Isle of Man to visit Daniels in his natural habitat, and the result was the following article entitled "Father time: Why George Daniels is the world's best horologist." Enjoy. Related Posts: For an in-depth look at the amazing work of Roger Smith, Daniels' protege, click here....

Omega had a lot to talk about this year at Basel World.? They showed us the new Planet Oceans with ceramic bezels and new movements, they showed us the new Speedmaster with co-axial chronograph movements, and the Lady Matic was a big deal for the fairer sex in that it represented a true women's watch with one hell of a serious movement inside. But to me, Omega's most interesting release was something else - a Seamaster that resembles the very first Seamaster from 1948.? The watch is techinically an Olympic-themed watch, determined as such by the pure coincidence that the last time London hosted the Olympics was in 1948, the year the Seamaster was introduced.?The watch features the ve...

Something about the J.Crew / Timex military watch never really jived with us. They claimed it was designed after a watch built to military specifications in the 1940s, but we could never actually find that watch.? Even when we went into the vault at Timex, we saw watches from the 1940s, but they didn't look anything like the modern interpretation that we see so often on the wrists of the young menswear set. So, we went on a mission to discover where this design came from, and when, if ever, Timex had a military contract to make wristwatches.? We found the watch that inspired the J.Crew piece, but we came to realize that it wasn't from the 1940s at all, but rather from the first half of 1982....
