The Horological Society of New York's award-winning classes are on the road again! HSNY is traveling to Denver on July 29th with hosts Norqain and Ben Bridge Jeweler. At HSNY's Horological Education classes, students discover what actually makes a watch tick under the guidance of the HSNY's staff of professional watchmakers. Students work on a mechanical watch movement, studying the gear train, winding and setting mechanisms, and escapement. The weekend half-day classes cover everything taught during the individual evening classes held in New York.Enrollment is now open for the classes, and we look forward to seeing you there!Hodinkee is a proud sponsor of the Ho...

Straight from Bienne, Switzerland, Omega has launched a trio of travel-ready Aqua Terra Worldtimers, marking the third major release from the brand this year following the Speedmaster Super Racing with Spirate, and new entrants into the colorful Aqua Terra line. These new Worldtimers come in three flavors (two and a half actually): steel with a bracelet; steel with a green rubber strap; and titanium with a strap. And with that, we will look at the titanium variant first because it offers more than just a different metal alone. The titanium Worldtimer differentiates itself from the pack because of, wel...

Spring auction season is fully underway and boy, what a start. With over $100 million in watches sold in Geneva this past weekend, it's obvious that vintage watches (and of course the few modern ones that sneak in) are going strong. There were a number of records broken, including a few surprises. Let's be honest, the strength of vintage watches C or watches in general C during the early days of the pandemic was a double-edged sword. Prices for nearly everything went through the roof and while it was great for sellers, it made some watches even more unattainable than they already were. But then the market softened and a lot of collectors got worried. If nothing e...

Nomos is a relatively young brand when it comes to Glashtte watchmaking, but they take the heritage of their surroundings and the horological prowess of the region seriously. So, in celebration of 175 (plus) years of Glashtte watchmaking, Nomos has announced three new Orion Neomatic watches in 36, 39, and 41mm, each limited to 175 pieces. Each is engraved as such on the back with the number in the series.? The brand says these watches draw inspiration from the early days of master watchmakers and horologists from Glashtte who used golden indices on white silver-plated dials and blued steel hands on their pieces. Of course, Nom...

When bidding on the prototype of Jean Claude Biver's first watch, the Biver Carillon Tourbillon, approached a million Swiss francs, auctioneer Aurel Bacs pulled a (what I presume to be very expensive) bottle of wine from under his podium. "In the unlikely event that bidding reaches one million francs," Bacs said to his audience, Biver had given him a bottle of wine from Biver's birth year (1949) to offer to the winner. The Carillon Tourbillon finally sold for an all-in price of CHF 1.27 million. It wasn't the biggest result of the weekend, but with two industry giants in the room C Biver and Bacs C egging on bidders at every increment, it was the most exciting mo...

The world of horology and watch collecting is an intriguing realm where passion, craftsmanship, and history converge. This past week, Hodinkee Insurance had the opportunity to delve into this fascinating universe during the exhibition "Time & Space: Watches from the Collection of Glen de Vries" preview at Hindman Auctions. Glen de Vries' remarkable watch collection is up for auction at Hindman. Glen de Vries, a well-known name in the field of space exploration and technology, had curated a collection that reflected his passion for both watches and outer space. In fact, de Vries was one of the passengers aboard Blue Origin's mission in October 2021. Tragically...

The fall auction season is just kicking off, and one of the early auctions this weekend takes place in sunny Monaco with the Monaco Legend Group's Exclusive Timepieces sale on October 21 and 22.? We visited Monaco earlier this year to cover their spring auction, which set a record for the auction house. It also turned out to be a fantastic place for watch spotting (part one and part two). Now I'm back to take a look at the lots on offer this weekend. This could be one of the biggest fall auction seasons C?or at least one of the biggest weathervanes for the state of collecting. Two of the biggest collectors are selling off this fall, s...

It's tricky figuring out how to cover an exciting new independent brand today. Often, if a new watchmaker picks up traction with enthusiasts and collectors, their watches will be sold through for multiple years before there's even a fully baked product.Such is the case of Berneron, the new brand of Sylvain Berneron, creative director at Breitling. Over the past two years, Berneron has been developing the Mirage, his first independent watch. At first glance, it looks like a beautiful, asymmetrical mash-up of a Patek Philippe Calatrava and Cartier Crash. But by refusing to compromise on his vision, Berneron has managed to create a watch that offers something unique, inside and out. ...

Fratello and Fortis are teaming up to release their first watch in a new capsule collection in recycled stainless steel, and if you were worried about missing it because you didn't click fast enough, there's some good news. The new Fratello Fortis Flieger F-43 Bicompax is a 43mm thick pilot's chronograph with a 55mm lug-to-lug, measuring 15mm. It's got 200m of water resistance so if you decide to go for a swim instead of up in the sky, you're covered there too. The brown dial features a brushed grain texture, finished with a bold outer minute track with luminous material at five-minute intervals, running seconds at nine o'clock...

Last week in Wetzlar, Germany, Leica held its annual Celebration of Photography event, which culminates with the presentation of the Oscar Barnak Award and has become the brand's premiere international moment and a welcome stage for special product announcements. Following last year's release of a modern re-issue of the legendary M6 (a film camera), Leica used this year's event to announce the first major evolution of the brand's watch lineup since the L1 and L2 were announced back in June of 2018. After some delay, the L-Series would not hit retail until last year (and the models C ?reviewed here C have since been renamed the ZM...

IWC has been experimenting with colorful ceramic cases for years now, but no color has attained as unanimous an approval rating as the Mojave collection. But if you're anything like me, you've loved Mojave from afar but haven't yet plunged into the sand. Why? Well, for one thing, the brand only created Mojave models in large sizes. You might recall the Big Pilot Mojave range from 2021, including a Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar. On one end of the spectrum you have a massive 46mm watch that C despite its handsome looks C is too big for my wrist and, on the other end, is all of that plus the elevated price tag by way of the QP complication. ...

Earlier this week, Bremont announced the next generation of the Supermarine S302, with new colorways and a new format for the GMT function. Still operating as the travel version of the brand's somewhat smaller take on its longstanding Supermarine line, the 2023 S302 is being offered in a trio of versions, including a very grey limited edition model.? I have, own, and very much enjoy a Gen 1 S302 ?and the proportions and construction are largely unchanged in the move to this new generation. The three-piece case is still 40mm wide, 13mm thick, and 49mm lug to lug.? What has changed is the way in which t...

Last week, I came across an auction listing on Christie's for a Grald Genta yellow gold, octagonal, sapphire-set automatic perpetual calendar. Lot no. 8 from The Dubai Edit Auction didn't exactly incite the specific rush I feel I constantly seek out from newly discovered material objects (you know, when the surge of adrenaline hits so hard, you feel like your heart is about to fall out of your mouth or when you get all wide-eyed and giddy and a little bit sweaty). But, maybe that's just me? Nonetheless, I stopped scrolling and paused to take a careful look at a watch that, in my opinion, bore very little resemblance to anything traditionally "watchy." Okay, it h...

With the release of the Raymond Weil x Basquiat Freelancer Special Edition, Raymond Weil finds its latest muse in the bold creative spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat, mixing a plethora of references to the artist's work into its design. ...

The gang over at the Purists got an exclusive early preview of a great new watch to be released at SIHH next week.? The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph is the follow-up to last year's phenomenally successful Tribute To Deep Sea Alarm.Taking many design cues from the European DSA, the Deep Sea Vintage is not actually a tribute to any particular watch, simply a vintage styled chronograph in the Deep Sea family.? It will share the same case dimensions as the DSA (41mm) and use JLC's caliber 751G automatic movement, beating at 28,800 bph.The JLC Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph will not be a limited edition.? We'll have more specs and live images from SIHH next week, so stay tuned.(via...

On New Year's day, a fire was set at the abadoned Westclox factory in Peru, Illinois - a fire that caused catastrophic damage to the factory and threatened several neighboring businesses.Westclox is one of many defunct American watchmaking brands along with Elgin (in Illinois) and Waltham (in Massachusetts). Many of those factories remain vacant today, a prospect that was no doubt unfeasible at a place like Westclox that at one point employed 5,000 people and produced, in the mid-20th century, 23,000 timepieces a day. Westclox had invented a new mechanical alarm system in 1909 they termed the Big Ben and their reputation in the space of alarm clocks is especially strong, and digital alarm cl...
