This Sunday is Super Bowl 51 and it will be the New England Patriots (again) duking it out with the Atlanta Falcons on one of the biggest stages in sports. Yesterday, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady participated in a press conference in Houston, Texas, where the game is being held, and on his wrist was the always-controversial TAG Heuer Connected Watch. Brady is no stranger to controversy himself, and is a polarizing figure in the sports world. Love him or hate him though, this weekend Brady will be playing to become the first NFL quarterback to win five Super Bowls in his career. Brady has also been a TAG Heuer ambassador since 2015, and has been seen weari...
Recommended Reading: The Wealthiest Individuals In Swiss Watchmaking
You get a general sense in reading about, and/or interacting with, the Swiss watch industry that despite the ups and downs that are an inevitable part of any business, some folks at least are doing well for themselves. And you'd be right; some folks are doing well for themselves. Very, very well, in fact. If you're wondering just how well, our colleague Su Jia Xian has put together a list of the 10 wealthiest individuals in the Swiss watch industry, per a Swiss business publication which puts together its own list of the wealthiest people in Switzerland, by industry, every year. There are some very unsurprising names on the list (Johann Rupert, for example, ...
In-Depth: The Curious Case Of The Patek Philippe Reference 3448 'Senza Luna'
When I first started working on this story, I thought it would be a straightforward, historical, "look, a crazy-beautiful and extremely unusual watch." What I found was much, much more interesting than that. It turns out that the Patek Philippe ref. 3448 "Senza Luna" is anything but straightforward. The reference 3448 has always been my favorite vintage reference from Patek Philippe. I will never forget the first time I saw one in the metal. I had just started working at Sotheby's and was swimming in reference and movement numbers, frantically cataloging and ordering extracts. The head of the department came over to my desk after receiving a shipment of watches and showed me a yellow gold 344...

Today, HSNY is introducing the Henry Fried Scholarship, with a goal to increase the number of students studying at full-time watchmaking schools in the USA. Most watchmaking schools in this country are free. Tuition is covered by a sponsoring br...
Found: Philippe Dufour Simplicity Number 17 For Sale Online
How far are watch collectors willing to go for an early Philippe Dufour Simplicity? At the very least, thats the question Silas Walton and his team are hoping to answer this week. The British watch dealer, who has a knack for finding rare pieces that have never been offered online, will be testing collectors' resolve once gain by giving them a chance to skip waiting lines and to dodge auction battles to buy what many consider to be one of the finest timepieces ever made. If they have $250,000 to spare, that is. The Simplicity in question is number 17, and if it looks like a watch that recently made headlines (right here on HODINKEE, in fact), well, that's ...

Hands-On: The Jaquet Droz Charming Bird, A Musical Automaton Wristwatch
The Jaquet Droz Charming Bird wristwatch is as far from the world of useful, utilitarian tool watches as it is possible for a watch to be. In fact, it's barely a wristwatch at all C in architecture, you'd call something like this a "folly." A building is called a folly when it's either purely decorative, with a form that suggests a practical function, or when it's simply extremely decorative (this is not a word you hear a lot nowadays C architectural follies having long since gone violently out of fashion, though many other follies seem to be flourishing). The thrill you get out of the Charming Bird watch, on the assumption that you find this sort of thing ...

Very rarely do you hear about watches being sold on a government website. Yet, the Italian Ministry of Defense made a spectacular announcement last September when it revealed that it would auction 40 pieces of the military-issued Breitling reference 817, all in one single lot. This was a very exciting news on many accounts, and not only for vintage Breitling enthusiasts. The Breitling reference 817 is an extremely elusive chronograph, manufactured in 1975 for the helicopter pilots of the Italian Army. One can only imagine the small size of the overall production, and the even smaller number of surviving pieces, with fewer than 40 having been accounted for up until now. A couple of months aft...
I know what youre thinking. Gold? For a dive watch? Why? First of all, youre right, gold is a ludicrous choice for a dive watch C but Panerai knows this. And so do all of the other watchmakers that have made gold divers (a long list that includes Cartier, IWC, and and even Rolex). So while you have every right to question why this watch is needed, it's good to keep in mind that for a few decades now, since the introduction of Quartz technology and in the diving world, of computers, its a question most mechanical watches face. And that brings us to the new PAM 684. The PAM 684 is not a watch I recommend diving with, and Im pretty sure youd hear the sam...
Whether you were watching the Super Bowl for Lady Gaga's performance, the commercials, and the nachos (like myself), or you were genuinely interested in the game, by now you have probably recovered from this past Sunday's eating festivities. To say the event was full of surprises would be the understatement of the year. The most talked about commercial came from a relatively unknown lumber company, Lady Gaga kept it PG-13, and the Patriots came back from a 28-3 deficit in the third quarter to eventually win the game 34-28. Last night, Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was on the Jimmy Fallon Show talking about his epic fourth quarter catch with his trusty?Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of t...
I know if feels like just yesterday we were watch spotting at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but believe it or not, the 2018 Winter Olympics are almost upon us! Omega has started the one-year countdown until the commencement, released the Seamaster Planet Ocean PyeongChang 2018 Limited Edition to commemorate the occasion. Omega has been the official timer of the Olympics since 1932 and continues to innovate in the arts of high-speed and high-intensity timing, and I am sure the Winter Olympics will give us another chance to see Omega push the envelop. But, for now, this new Seamaster. The Seamaster Planet Ocean PyeongChang 2018 Limited Edition, is surely the first o...
This week we have a diverse selection of vintage watches, not organized around any particular theme; rather, each has some striking feature that makes it stand out. There is a Mido Multi-Centerchrono, rarely seen in its stainless steel/pink gold configuration, and also a Cartier Tank Arrondie, a best-seller in the 1970s. There is also a military Heuer Autavia reference 73463 plus a full-set Rolex GMT-Master reference 1675. This is your Bring A Loupe for February 10, 2017. A 1970s Cartier Tank Arrondie Can a Cartier watch be called a Tank if it is not strictly rectangular? Since 1936 and the Tank...
Hands-On: The Farer Automatic Endurance
If you're not already familiar with Britain-based watch maker Farer, you should be. This young company has hit the market with some vintage-inspired timepieces retailing for just over $1,000 and they look pretty great while doing so too. The watch pictured here is the Endurance from the relatively new collection of automatic watches, the second set of releases after the brand's quartz debut. It's worth a closer look. The Endurance is one of three new automatic watches from British brand Farer. Farer was founded in 2015 by four friends who wanted to start a vintage-inspired watch brand at a more affordable price point. The bran...
Introducing: The Seiko Presage Enamel Collection, A Quartet Of Elegant Everyday Watches
Seiko's Presage collection is one of the best kept secrets in watchmaking. While Grand Seiko and Prospex get the attention, Presage continues quietly delivering incredible value and beautiful styles without batting an eye. Today Seiko has announced a new addition to the Presage collection, a set of four simple watches each bearing a hand-made enamel dial with elegant Roman numerals. Let's take a closer look at these new watches and what they bring to the table. Just a few months ago we got a limited edition watch for Presage's 60th anniversary, but earlier in 2016 Seiko introduced a pair of chronographs to mark the same occasion. One had a black Urushi lacquer di...
Recommended Reading: Astronaut Wally Schirra's Personal Breitling Chronograph (For Sale, No Less)
We all know that when it comes to space exploration the Omega Speedmaster is the watch. It was flown on countless important missions, including Apollo 11, the first to put men on the moon, and beat out watches from Rolex, Longines, and others to become the official NASA choice. In fact, it's still the choice of astronauts today. But in 2003 Breitling gifted a few dozen aviation pioneers with special commemorative chronographs and we've found that of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronaut Wally Schirra for sale online. Obviously, since it was gifted in 2003, this wasn't a watch that accompanied Schirra into space, but its still an interesting piece of explora...
Last month, in Part I of this story, I took a look at a vintage Girard-Perregaux pocket watch with a very unusual spherical balance spring. As I mentioned back then, the 19th century was something of a golden age for the evolution of precision timekeeping, and it was also a time when what you might call classical precision timekeeping was born, eventually flourished, and then gradually declined. Spherical balance spring, Girard-Perregaux pocket chronometer, 1860 If that statement's not to be immediately laughed off, I have to say what I mean by "classical" precision timekeeping. The fascinating thing about the period very roug...

Hands-On: The Habring2 Erwin Scientific Dial
For those in the know,?Habring2 is one of the more interesting watchmaking outfits of the last decade. Husband and wife duo Richard and Maria Habring create relatively under-the-radar watches in Austria, with interesting complications like split-seconds chronographs and jumping seconds mechanisms. This is high taste level stuff. The couple's latest creation, the Erwin, has an in-house movement and a jumping seconds mechanism, a first for the brand, and, just a few months after the watch's release, U.S. distributor Martin Pulli gives us a great new aesthetic option with the Erwin Scientific Dial.? Back in October, Habring2 introduced the Erwin as a sort of h...
