Pre-Baselworld 2014: Introducing The Spirit Seafire, The First Chronograph From Speake-Marin
Peter Speake-Marin has become a mainstay in the independent landscape with watches like the Triad, Vegas Ten, Renaissance, and Thelassa, each a unique take on his now signature style and Piccadilly case. While he has numerous complications under his belt, one that has eluded the Speake-Marin collection is a chronograph. That changes today with the introduction of the Spirit Seafire, a Naval-inspired affair featuring a titanium case and large deposits of LumiNova within the dial.?The Seafare might introduce a new complication to the brand, but its immediately recognizable as a Speake-Marin. Lets take a look at the details. The Seafare bears a familiar and classic chronograph layout, with sub...
Watch Shopping In NYC: Inside The Vacheron Constantin Boutique (VIDEO)
One of the questions we are most often asked is "what's the best shop for watch lovers in NYC?" It's a tough one to answer, but surely at the top of the list would have to be the Vacheron Constantin boutique at the southeast corner of 64th and Madison. Why? Not only is it the manufacture's first factory owned boutique in North America, but in fact, the reasons run deeper than that. You see, this Vacheron boutique is not only the first store in the US to get all the incredible pieces that hit your average retailer, but they also carry a line of watches just their own C many of which you will seldom see in the real world.? ...
Introducing Martenero, A New York Upstart That Encourages Some Customer Creativity
Upstart New York watch brand Martenero launched just a few weeks ago, offering customizable mechanical watches for under $500. There are two models in the first collection, the Founder and the Ace, both modern reinterpretations of classic sport watches. Martenero co-founders Matt O'Dowd and John Tarantino stopped by HODINKEE HQ with a few of their creations so we could take a closer look. Overall, we were impressed by the build quality and the styling, both of which present a lot of value for the sub-$500 price tag. That you can make each your own with customized details adds that little extra touch. Two years ago, Matt O'Dow...
Watch Spotting: The Story Of Two Astronauts And Their Omegas, As Seen In Sochi
Two weeks ago, Omega invited me to Sochi to check out a few events at the Winter Games.? The experience itself was pretty exhilarating, having been neither to the Olympics (anywhere) or to Russia before.? But, to me, the most memorable take away of my time in Russia was actually not any of the athletic events, but rather the time I spent with two old men.? One of them, 83, and an American, the other 79, and a Russian.? They both wore gold Omegas, and they'd been friends since the mid-70s.? But these aren't your averages grandpas.? No, no.? Both of these guys were spacemen of the highest order and their four decade relationship is the stuff of lore. ? Here is a little look into the shared liv...

Babe Ruth's 1923 Yankees World Series Pocket Watch Sells For $717,000 At Auction
A few weeks ago we told you about Babe Ruth's Gruen pocket watch commemorating the Yankees' 1923 World Series title. Well, yesterday that watch sold at Heritage Auctions in New York City for $717,000 after buyer's premium as part of a massive sale of historic sports memorabilia. Although Heritage does allow live online bidding, the winning bidder won the watch live on the phone; there is no word yet as to who the buyer is, and whether they're a watch collector or just a huge Babe Ruth fan. We're not surprised that this watch commanded a massive price, but not all sports-associated watches do. This Wittnauer Electro-Chron owned by Joe Dimaggio?sold at Antiquorum in 2008 for $13,800 and two yea...
Found: A Timex Worn By A Member Of The "Miracle On Ice" Hockey Team At The 1980 Winter Olympics
For many, the most memorable Winter Olympics moment of all time occurred when the United States men's hockey team beat the USSR for a spot in the gold medal game (which they would go on to win) in Lake Placid, New York. Today, we bring you a 1980 Timex issued to Phil Verchota, a forward on the "Miracle on Ice" team, which is on the block at Heritage Auctions. This watch was part of a special group of watches issued to the US Olympians participating in the 1980 Winter Olympics, and it comes with a letter from Verchota verifying that he wore it.This watch is quartz and certainly among the coolest Timexes we have ever seen. On the dial above 6 o'clock is the US shield with the Olympic rings in ...
The original Mikrograph was introduced in early 2011 and was the first wrist chronograph to measure accurately down to 1/100th of a second. The central hands spins cleanly around the dial once per second and is astounding to watch. The Avant Garde is a limited edition update to the Mikrograph with a combination black titanium and rose gold case, giving the watch an updated look and a lower price. We were able to go hands-on with one of only fifty pieces at the TAG Heuer boutique in New York City and here are our thoughts. Just looking at the Avant Garde, you'll notice it has a much sportier feel than the original Mikrograph...
A few weeks ago at SIHH 2014 we were given a special preview of this new skeletonized perpetual calendar from Jaeger-LeCoultre C and today we're finally allowed to share it with you. The Master Grande Tradition Quantime Perptuel 8 Jours SQ is inspired by a JLC pocket watch from 1928 and places an ornately skeletonized and decorated 8-day perpetual calendar movement in an elegant white gold case accented by blue champlev enamel rings. This really shows off both the technical prowess and high-end finishing abilities of Jaeger-LeCoultre in a way that doesn't pull any punches. The inspiration for this watch is the 1928 perpe...
On The Media's TLDR Explains Swatch Internet Time
Back in 1998, Swatch tried no small task: to fundamentally change how we track time around the world. The idea was called ".beat time" and "internet time," and was supposed to simplify communicating across the world in the age of the internet by doing away with timezones and small units like seconds, instead dividing the day into 1000 event units. The experiment has been largely forgotten, but NPR's blog and podcast TLDR decided to take a closer look into why .beat time was born in the first place and why we're not all wearing .beat watches today. This is definitely worth a read and a listen. The basics are pretty straightforward: with internet time, the only units are "beats" and there are 1...
Panerai Releases Four New Navigational Instruments Inspired By A 1930s Yacht
Panerai releases four new navigational instruments inspired by the 1936 Bermudian Ketch, Eilean. During WWII, it was Panerai that released the first diving watch, the Radiomir 3646, so water has always been central to what the brand is about. As an homage to its nautical heritage, Panerai has created four new devices: a wall clock, a barometer, a thermometer, and a hygrometer, all influenced by a classic yacht called the Eilean that Panerai acquired in 2007. Coincidentally, the Eilean was built the same year that Panerai supplied the prototype Radiomir to the Italian Navy, 1936. The Eilean participants in gatherings of the Pan...
Introducing The Tetra Berlin Collection, A Few New Colorful Watches From Nomos
Nomos Tetra Berlin Collection Nomos has made a name for itself by doing things its own way instead of following other brands or chasing the latest trend. Here we have four new takes on the basic Tetra, Nomos's square watch, that were designed in Berlin to reflect four significant landmarks in the German capital. Three of the four are still powered by the in-house alpha caliber, a great manually-wound movement made in Glashtte, and there are four colors of varying intensities to choose from. The Tetra Berlin collection is a mix of traditional elements and modern flourishes that is distinctly Nomos. Nomos Alpha Caliber ...

You Can Help Send An Omega Speedmaster Into Space (Well, Almost)
Photo of the Stratosphere by The Icarus Project As a follow-up to yesterday's A Week On The Wrist review of the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, we have an entirely different kind of story about a Speedy. Hopefully, this one will be going to (almost) space. Dustin Neikirk is a watch lover who grew up aspiring to be an astronaut, and while his dream never quite came true, he is now trying to make up for some lost time by sending an Omega Speedmaster into the stratosphere and filming the entire thing. The mission involves a weather balloon, some cameras, and of course a Speedmaster C and Neikirk is crowdfunding the entire thing.?We were a little shocked when ...
A Week On The Wrist: The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon
The Omega Speedmaster has remained a mainstay for watch enthusiasts for over half a century. Its not a stretch at all to call this watch an icon, a term we don't throw around loosely here. While purists may scoff at the concept of an all-black Speedmaster, it is precisely this kind of update that brings a historical icon into the realm of contemporary thinking. When presented with the opportunity to wear the new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon for a week, I couldnt refuse. It's a watch I had been eyeing for some time, and while it isnt exactly perfect, it certainly got me thinking and was tough to take off my wrist when the week was up. A (Brief) History of ...
Found: A 1950s Vacheron Constantin Reference 4178 Chronograph For Sale At Vacheron's NYC Boutique
Vacheron Constaintin's boutique in NYC is one of my favorite manufacture-owned stores in town for a few reasons.? We'll explore that in greater details in the coming weeks, but one reason I often go out of my way to visit the store on the corner of 64th and Madison is because they are one of just three Vacheron boutiques in the entire world to feature their "Collectionneurs" line.? What does that mean? It's essentially a very fancy word for vintage Vacherons. Yes, the VC boutique in NYC sells vintage Vacherons, and during a visit last week I stumbled upon this amazing ref. 4178 chronograph. What Vacheron does is go out and ac...
Having created watches for a variety of sports C like this RM27-01 worn by Rafael Nadal C Richard Mille presents a new high-tech watch for a different arena: nautical navigation. The RM 60-01 Regatta Flyback Chronograph includes a bevy of navigational features to ensure that your position at sea can be determined in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The looks and technical details are distinctly Richard Mille, with a skeletonized dial and cutting-edge features including a self-winding movement that can be customized to suit your personal activity level. At the core of the RM 60-01 is the Caliber RMAC2, a self-windi...
Back in December we gave you the very first live photos of the Piaget 38mm Altiplano 900P, the thinnest mechanical watch in the world. The 900P celebrates Piaget's 140th anniversary and continues the manufacture's long tradition of pushing the limits of ultra-thin watches. At SIHH we got our hands on the red gold version of this watch and were just as impressed with it as we were with the white gold version. Here's a recap of what makes the 900P so special and a detailed look at the rose gold presentation. Enjoy. The Piaget 38mm Altiplano 900P had to take an entirely new approach to construction in order to achieve its amazi...
