A. Lange & Sohne Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna Last year A. Lange & Sohne made quite the statement introducing the Grand Complication at SIHH, and this year we have another extremely complicated, if slightly more wearable, watch from Lange. The Terraluna starts with a regulator-style time display, adds a perpetual calendar with Lange's classic big date, houses an orbtial moonphase display on the movement itself and is powered by a 14-day movement with constant force escapement. When we said extremely complicated, we weren't exaggerating at all. Here we've got your very first look at this amazing new watch from A. Lange & Sohne, complete with an...

I'm calling it right now C within the first few hours of the opening of SIHH 2014 C this is going to be one of the coolest watches of the week.? You're looking at the Montblanc Meisterstck Heritage Pulsograph, and if you know anything about the history of Montblanc, or great 20th century chronographs, you can guess where this is headed C in particular if you know what the little cursive "M" stands for on the dial.? This. Watch. Is. Awesome. First things first, the Pulsograph is just one member of an entirely new line from Montblanc called the Meisterstck Heritage collection.? Inspired by MB's legendary line of pens, this ne...

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle 14-Day Tourbillon Openworked The 14-day tourbillon is something of a modern Vacheron Constantin classic, and today we have for you the most superlative edition yet, the Openworked in a platinum case. The calibre 2260 SQP was designed from the beginning in layers to really show off the openworking at each level and the results are nothing short of astounding. Although the skeletonizing is ornate, it still has a very modern masculine feel to it and every component, no matter how small, seems to bear some little flourish or finish that catches the eye. Here's a full in-depth look at this brand new marvel from Vacheron, live...

Well, we made it to Geneva. And we're already at it. ?One of our first stops today was a visit with modern marvel makers De Bethune, whose impressive in-house calibers often take on a Star Trek-like shape. The latest introduction comes from the seldom mentioned line within De Bethune called the "Dream Watch" collection. ?You see most of the 350 watches per year made by De Bethune are split between the DB28 (with the trademark articulating lugs) and the DB25 families. ?The Dream Watch line sits outside these two collections, and today we have a look at the latest artistic expression of De Bethune in Dream Watch 5. ? Ok so what...

Yup, our bags are packed, our cameras (and phones, and laptops, and ipads) are charged, and we're off to Geneva for the SIHH (or Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) where 16 of the finest watch manufactures in the world will show select press, retailers, and collectors their latest and greatest.? So, where can you follow us??Well, you can follow all the action here on HODINKEE using the SIHH 2014 tag, or subscribe to our daily email, but if you can't wai...

To kick of 2014, JeanRichard is introducing three new models into its Terrascope and 1681 collections, plus a special watch dedicated to two good causes. The new Terrascopes and 1681 all feature matte black dials, a departure from JeanRichard's usual brushed dial style. The details on these different models vary, and each brings something new to the collection. The last watch we have for you today is the 208 Seconds Aeroscope, inspired by Captain Sully Sullenberger's heroic landing in the Hudson River in 2009. The chronograph is limited to 208 pieces, with proceeds benefiting two charities. The first watch we have here is the...

Earlier this year, Chopard opened the doors of a state of the art service center in Miami, an event we were on hand to witness. During the proceedings, I took the opportunity to re-acquaint myself with the brands L.U.C line of watches and decided that a Week on the Wrist review was in order. After some debate, I settled on the Twin Lunar L.U.C because of its unique dial composition and dominant moonphase aperture, a complication that seems to be enjoying a resurgence in popularity in recent months. So how does this one stack up? Lets take a closer look to find out. Introduction 1996 marked a return ...

Roger W. Smith is considered one of the finest watchmakers in the world, making fewer than 20 pieces each year, completely by hand on the Isle of Man.? He is the unofficial apprentice of the legendary George Daniels, and actually one of the very first independent watchmakers I met years back when I started HODINKEE (you can see my crude videos of those first meetings here and here.) Smith is also just one hell of a nice guy, and whenever I hear about a new watch from him I get excited to see it C whether it's the Daniels anniversary watch or?this new unique piece commissioned by the British government. So what exactly are we look...

Eleven James Logo Eleven James is a newly launched annual membership program that allows members to wear wristwatches from brands like Patek Philippe, Omega, and Audemars Piguet, for up to two months at a time. Founder Randy Brandoff brings a wealth of experience in the area of luxury rentals from his time as chief marketing officer of NetJets (a fractional ownership program for private jets). Eleven James officially launched last night in New York City, and as an avid watch enthusiast, Brandoff was eager to chat with HODINKEE about Eleven James, the bridge between his business and his passion.Hodinkee: Is the concept of luxury tied to the concept of ownership? How...

Only a few weeks ago we told you about the newest addition to the Grand Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931 family, the Chocolate Reverso. It combines a soft pink gold case with a brown dial inspired by an early Reverso from Jaeger-LeCoultre's archives, finishing everything off with a burgundy cordovan strap from Argentinian polo boot maker Casa Fagiliano. In advance of SIHH, we got our hands on not only the new Chocolate Reverso, but also the watch that inspired its creation (and a pair of Fagliano boots for good measure). The Chocolate Reverso's pink gold case is the Grand Reverso size, meaning it comes in at 46.8mm x 27.4mm...

The watch on the right is a Universal Geneve Tri-Compax in stainless steel. It belonged to a man named Reginald Fullerton, who was the grandson of the great early 20th century watch collector (and commissioner of the most expensive watch in history) Henry Graves, Jr. It was sold at the final Graves auction that took place in June of 2012 at Sotheby's.? I purchased it at that sale for around $2,750, and you can read why I did that right here.?The watch dates to about 1945 (Fullerton purchased it new from the Henri Stern Watch Agency in 1948 while visiting with his grandfather) and features a triple calendar, plus moonphase, and chronograph, in a steel case.?The watch on the left looks a heck ...

Montblanc's 2014 lineup was strong. Models such the Meisterstck Heritage Pulsograph, the Villeret 1858 Vintage Pulsographe and the Meisterstck Heritage Perpetual Calendar paved the way to a strong 2015. Montblanc also recently revealed its Orbis Terrarum Worldtimer with an in-house complication at a rather accessible price point. The new Montblanc Heritage Chronomtrie Dual Time draws from that same development process and introduces a dual-time complication. The stainless-steel case of the Dual Time measures in at 41 mm x 9.9 mm. It has a modern dress diameter and is slim enough to easily slide under a cuff. A flat bezel, alternately polished and satin-finished balances the dressiness and...

Today Audemars Piguet is probably best known for its Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore sport watch collections (more on that here), but back in the early twentieth century AP was the king of grand complications. None of that know-how has disappeared and this watch brings both facets of the brand together. The robust Offshore-style case in titanium with a black ceramic bezel houses a calibre 2885 movement that has been given very clean, modern finishing that harmonizes nicely with the overall package. There are only three of these incredible watches and here we have tons of live photos, all the details on each complication, and even a video of the minute repeater in action. Check it out here....

In anticipation of Baselworld 2014, Omega presents an update to the iconic 1969 Speedmaster Mark II. While most of the changes are on the inside (including an in-house co-axial movement), the first thing youll notice is that the tonneau-style case has remained unaltered, lending a retro look to this watch. Both the case and bracelet are brushed stainless steel, which works nicely with both dial options, one more understated than the other. Details are still a little sparse, but here's your first look at this brand new Speedy. The original 1969 Mark II used Omega's Calibre 861 C a movement that tends to be very high-up on the wis...

It was at last year's SIHH that A. Lange & Sohne revealed the absolutely mind-boggling?Grand Complication, which, as you would expect, got most of the attention at the time. But, quietly, Lange also updated the 1815 collection with a new Up/Down. This sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from the Grand Complication, telling only the time and the power reserve, executed with simplicity and elegance. At 39mm and available in three colors of gold, this is a great modern take on the classic dress watch, and one worth looking back at before Lange gives us more for 2014. Our full hands-on look from SIHH 2013 here....

Arnold & Son has introduced a number of entirely new watches over the last few years, many of which focus on unusual movements and historic ideas. This includes the Time Pyramid, a watch inspired by nineteenth century pyramid clocks that puts all the attention right on the triangular in-house movement. Until now it was only available in 18k red gold, but Arnold & Son has unveiled a new stainless steel edition of the Time Pyramid. It's a more modern take on an otherwise historically-minded watch and here we've got all the details. A few months ago we gave you a hands-on look at the Time Pyramid, and we were pretty exci...

We never want to shine a light on other people's misfortunes here at HODINKEE, but today, we're going to. But, only to teach you all a little something. Earlier today, a new member joined the Vintage Rolex Forum. He said he was a long time reader but first time poster, and was excited to show off his newly acquired Rolex Submariner 6538 "Four Liner" with big crown. This is a watch you may be familiar with because we profiled one here that sold at Christie's for $544,000. These watches are epic, and while that result above was something special even by this watch's standards, they are certainly not inexpensive. So when this ...

Most of Vacheron Constantin's novelties for 2013 were ladies pieces that focused on metiers d'art, which, while we appreciate them for the beauty and handwork that goes into each piece, are not something most HODINKEE readers will want to wear personally. The Patrimony Traditionnelle Platine, on the other hand, is something nearly any watch lover can get excited about. This is the first Patrimony Traditionnelle with the in-house, manually-wound calibre 4400 to feature a platinum case, which pairs perfectly with the multi-tone slate grey dial. If you're looking for an elegant dress watch that straddles the classic/modern line perfectly, look no further. Full story here....

What we have for you here is some classic vintage Patek Philippe goodness. This is a great example of the legendary reference 1463 chronograph, Patek's first waterproof chronograph and the immediate predecessor to today's ref. 5070. While a few examples were made in stainless steel, the majority are yellow gold like this watch and feature a number of typical mid-century Patek traits. If you're looking for a watch that embodies what vintage Patek Philippe is all about, look no further. Patek first launched the 1463 in the early 1940s and the watch was produced continuously until the late 1960s. You might be thinking at this p...

Today we have for you a very early look at the eleventh piece of haute horology in Jaeger-LeCoultre's Hybris Mechanica collection, the Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon. While the last few years Hybris Mechanica has been more focused on very three-dimensional complications (like the Gyrotourbillon 3, for example), this entry into the collection is the first ultra-thin Grand Complication from Jaeger-LeCoultre. The entire package comes in at just 7.9mm thick with a 41mm case diameter. In those close quarters you have a 471-part in-house movement that brings together a flying tourbillon and a minute repeater. T...
