IWC Mark XVII Edition Le Petit Prince A few weeks ago we told you about this year's Saint-Exupry watches from IWC, the Mark XVII and Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar Edition Le Petit Prince. The former is relatively restrained in design while still being noticeably different from the original Mark XVII, and comes in at a relatively accessible price point, especially for a limited edition. We got our hands on the Mark XVII Le Petit Prince to get a closer look and were happy with what we found. The Mark XVII Edition Le Petit Prince starts out much the same as the standard Mark XVII. You have the same case with screw down crown and soft-iron inner case for magnetic protec...

We told you about the (RED) auction last week, and even gave some of you a private, hands-on look at the two limited edition pieces Jaeger-LeCoultre would donate to this special Marc Newson, Jony Ive curated sale. ?Last night, to a packed house, the auction went down in record form. ?The total brought in more than $12,000,000, and the two JLC pieces performed unbelievably well. ?The Deep Sea Alarm (one of three - the other two were given to Ive and Newson) brought down $365,000, while the piece unique Atmos 561 sold for $425,000 all in. ? Some other interesting results include $977,000 for the Mac pro, over $1.8M for the Leic...

John Goldberger doesn't play in the NBA (though, in his younger years, he could dunk a basketball C I've seen proof). ?He hasn't won a Grammy, nor has he dated Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, or Katy Perry (that we know of), but even if he had, he wouldn't talk about it. ?What John Goldberger is is a true horological scholar and serious collector of the highest order. ?His name in the world of watches is synonymous with expertise, quality, discretion, and taste. ?He is perhaps best known to watch lovers as the author of not only 100 Superlative Rolex Watches and Patek Philippe Steel Watches, but also books about early Omega and Longines. Goldberger didn't just write these books, either. H...

Today, Nomos announces an addition to their line of crisp, contemporary Bauhaus-inspired watches: the Metro 38 Datum. The changes are subtle, but they make for a clear delineation between the original Metro and this new version. There's no longer a power reserve indicator on the dial, facilitating the shift of the Nomos insignia from 9 o'clock to 12. Additionally, the case diameter has increased just a bit, from 37 mm to 38.5 mm with a thickness of just 7.75 mm. A Cleaner Update To The Original Model The Nomos Metro with in-house Swing System escapement was first introduced at Baselworld 2014. The remo...

A group of thirty dedicated Heuer collectors recently made a pilgrimage of sorts to the TAG Heuer Headquarters and Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds to meet, discuss all things (TAG) Heuer, and of course enjoy some watches. It ended up being an extraordinary opportunity to see some of Heuer's greatest creations going back more than half a century. That Jack Heuer himself was our host certainly didn't hurt. Photo by TAG Heuer Watch collector meet-ups can be a great way to put faces to names and to see watches in the metal that may have only previously been seen on computer screens. At this particular meet-up, it was collectors focuse...

Given the opportunity to collect any modern brand, based solely on your aesthetic preferences, where would you go? For Toshio Aoyama, founder of Japanese luxury lifestyle publication Nile's Nile, the answer was simple: F.P.Journe. We had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Aoyama during a recent trip to?Japan, learning more about his tastes as a collector and the reason he bought not one, but two Journes on his first visit to the Tokyo boutique. Not unlike one of our previous interview subjects, Alan Maleh,?Mr. Aoyama doesn't shy away from the fact that his purchases are, for the most part, dictated by the aesthetic design of each timepiece. The fact that both these collectors oversee luxury lif...

Westime MusicMachine Back on The Road To Basel, we gave you an inside look at the MusicMachine, a collaboration between MB&F and Reuge. The mechanical "music box," if you can call it that, plays six songs on two metal barrels, one dedicated to sci-fi themes and the other to rock and?roll classics. The MusicMachine came in two colorways and now?California's Westime has unveiled a very limited edition set of MusicMachines with a bright blue fuselage. This futuristic music box was undisputedly one of the hits of the 2013 Basel World fair and it doesn't even tell time. The mechanical device looks like a spaceship, but the "engines" are actually two barrels each with...

It would be an understatement to say that Christie's put on quite the show last week in Geneva with both the "Lesson One" Rolex Daytona sale and the Important Watches auction the next day. But, the next Christie's auction is close at hand, taking place in Hong Kong on November 27th. Here we have a few highlights from the impressive catalog. Patek Philippe ref. 5016 Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater We'll start with something big, a minute repeating perpetual calendar from Patek Philippe. MeisterSinger Paleograph MeisterSinger produces watches that are an exercise in restrained utility. You may be familiar with the?Singular, the brand's single hand time-only watch, and at this?years SalonQP, MeisterSinger introduced the latest addition to its niche range of single-handed watches: the Paleograph. Harkening back to the early days of watchmaking, the Paleograph uses a single button to control the chronograph function to go with its signature single-hand time display. It wasnt until after World War I that chronograph wristwatches received a second button for zero-reset, and it is this era that the Paelograph recalls.?The watch uses the MSYN13 manual wi...

I always like to begin my stories about Laurent Ferrier with the same fact. This man, who now makes some of the finest watches around, who also spent four decades of service at a little company called Patek Philippe, ultimately achieving the position of technical and product director, not only raced at 24 hours of LeMans in 1979, but actually podiumed, coming in third place. Who came in second? The team featuring one Mr. Paul Newman. So, no matter what you think of Mr. Ferrier's watches, he is, was, and always will be, incredibly cool. And about those watches. We've given you a diatribe or two on why we love Laurent Ferrier so mu...

Today marks Jack Heuer's last day as Honorary Chairman of TAG Heuer. Jack has decided to hang it up in order to finally be able to enjoy retirement. Why today,?November 18th? It is the day before his 81st birthday and he had told himself he only wanted to work until he was 80. We know Jack won't be disappearing into the sunset quite yet, as he has an autobiography coming out soon.?However, we would like to mark this occasion by highlighting a few of his many accomplishments. Heuer Jack purchased his uncle's shares in the family company in 1962, taking control fresh out of finishing his graduate studies in engineering. Shortly ...

Zenith El Primero Lightweight A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Zenith's latest technological innovation, the El Primero Lightweight. This new take on the Striking Tenth chronograph telegraphs a new direction for Zenith, one that promises the use of new materials and a dedication to emulating the spirit of innovation that gave us the original El Primero in 1969. This was is one that you really have to see to believe and here we've got live photos to prove it.Watches promoted as lightweight can be difficult to judge online. Just how light is light? And when you strap the watch on, does that lightness translate into anything or is it simply a...

The "Golden Hand" is the top prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genve, awarded to the watch that excites the judges most, across all of the various judging categories. Armin Strom introduced their Gravity collection of watches in Basel earlier this year, using the line to showcase the manufacture's first automatic movement with a micro-rotor, the AMR13. Continuing to draw inspiration from the base elements, the Gravity watches come in four flavors: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. Each pushes the brands unique take on skeletonization and engraving further into contemporary waters, but do they go too far?I spent a week with the Armin Strom Gravity Earth in search of the balance between the sculptural aesthetic and time keeping practicality. While the watch predictably falls somewhere in the middle, this simple three-hander offers a complex take on its minimal ...

Thomas Tompion Pocket Watch This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Time For Everyone symposium in Pasadena, California. In addition to learning about all manner of time related topics, including time and the brain, the establishment of standardized timekeeping, and the public display of time, I visited the opening of Majestic Time, an exhibition commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of legendary British clockmaker Thomas Tompion. Here is an inside look at this truly amazing collection of clocks. Before we get into the exhibition itself, a little background on Tompion will be useful. He's quite an enigmatic figure, born in Bedfordshire, England i...
