Introducing The MB&F HM4 Final Edition - A Stealth Machine To Round Out The HM4 Collection
HM4 Final Edition The MB&F HM4 Thunderbolt has been released in a number of editions over the last few years. But this Final Edition will be one of the most difficult to get your hands on (excluding the Only Watch with a panda, of course). Inspired by stealth planes, Max Bsser has taken the final eight HM4 movements and created the Final Edition. The Thunderbolt was inspired by jet planes from the very beginning. In fact, the entire architecture of the HM is built around the two "engines," one terminating in the pilot watch dial with which the HM4 tells time. We've seen the?WWII-inspired pin-up...
Event Recap: An Evening With Bremont Watch Company And The New Supermarine S2000
Last week we spent an evening with Bremont Watch Company at New York City's Ace Hotel to give HODINKEE readers a closer look at the new Supermarine S2000. Bremont Co-Founder Nick English was on-hand to answer questions over drinks and hors d'oeuvres, along with a massive collection of Bremont watches.?We already gave you a closer look at the S2000, but there is nothing like speaking with the man behind the watch. Nick English treated our guests to a brief presentation explaining the history of Bremont, his family's deep connection with aviation and performance engineering, and what drives him to create Bremont watches.?Please enjoy the above video and photos from last week's festivities. Dispatches: Vintage Watch Shopping In Japan: Private Eyes, An Incubator For Collecting
Beyond the highly-stylized entrance of Private Eyes lays what can be best described as an anachronistic incubator for vintage watch collecting. Not hyper-speculative, inflation-averse watch collecting, but the type of passionate, reverential collecting that has more to do with a true?respect for old-world design of both the aesthetic and technical sort. While the commodity-level watches on the ground level do reflect a fine appreciation for vintage watches, I was grateful to be shown a selection of the proprietor's personal favorites C?some truly stunning examples of watches that he would never part with (and some that he would), that made the trip to this mostly residential Tokyo neighborho...
Introducing: The Habring2 Doppel 3, Another Generation Of Split-Seconds Chronograph
Habring2 is the independent brand founded by the man who invented the Doppelchronograph for IWC over two decades ago, Richard Habring, along with his wife Maria. We've shown you their Doppel 2.0 split-seconds chronograph before, and today we have the next step for these masters of the rattrapante, the Doppel 3. Click through for details and photos. Three Color Choices Utilizing the A08MR-MONO calibre, the Doppel 3 takes the rattrapante a step further than the Doppel 2.0, reducing the interface to just two pushers. At 2 o'clock is the pusher for start/stop/reset, and opposite, at 10 o'clock is the split pusher. The layout gives...
Video: Inside The Offices of Patek Philippe USA
Just Wednesday, we had the distinct pleasure of being among the first visitors to Patek Philippe's new, state-of-the-art US headquarters. Located in a gorgeous, sprawling space above Rockefeller center, the new offices of Patek Philippe USA (or the Henri Stern Watch Agency, as it is officially known) were designed specifically to cater to both the demands of its (occasionally very high profile) clients, and to create a light, organic work environment for its employees.?Specifically, they took great care in creating the new after-sales watchmaker's studio - which sits right above Fifth Avenue and across the street from the famous St. Patrick's Cathedral C arguably the best work environment we...
Introducing The Harry Winston Histoire De Tourbillon 4
The Harry Winston Histoires De Tourbillon 4 Today we've got the latest installment in Harry Winston's Histoire De Tourbillon series, a collection of watches meant to explore various directions in which the tourbillon can evolve. The Histoire De Tourbillon 4 features a unique triple-case tourbillon in an attempt to counteract the effects of gravity from all angles, as unlike the pocketwatches for which the tourbillon was invented, our wristwatches are constantly in motion. Triple Cage Tourbillon The tourbillon mechanism in this watch is one of the most complex out there. There are three concentric cag...
A Week On The Wrist: The Tudor Pelagos
The Tudor Pelagos. This is a watch I've been dying to get my hands-on for an extended period of time since I first saw it at Basel World in March of last year. And, despite the fact that Tudor isn't even sold in the country in which I reside, I still felt strongly that we needed to review this watch in detail, for your sake. You see, there seems to be an almost preternatural desire to learn more about Tudor from HODINKEE readers. ?We've received countless emails, tweets, and message about both the Pelagos and the vintage inspired Black Bay, so we did everything we could to get our hands on one. So, without further ado, here is your Week On The Wrist review of the Tudor Pelagos. ...
Yesterday morning I was invited by Patek Philippe USA to see their beautiful new offices (you'll see more on that tomorrow). While I was there, I had a chance to sit down with Patek Philippe chief Thierry Stern to chat about the new space and what's been shaking since last we spoke. We'll get to that soon enough, but first thing's first, I had to show you what Mr. Stern had on his wrist. Patek Philippe Ref. 5208 Grand Complication As you might expect, Mr. Stern was wearing one impressive watch - in this case the Reference 5208 Triple Grand Complication in platinum. Coming in at 42mm, it's large for a Patek Philippe, but there...
Hands-On: With The Nomos Tangente Datum, Winner Of A 2012 Good Design Award
Nomos Tangente Datum Glashtte's Nomos has built quite the reputation for itself as one of the top choices for design-minded watch guys. The brand's Tangente Datum even received a Good Design Award in 2012, but what makes this watch so special is that the excellent design starts with the smallest components and builds outward to the overall appearance. Here we give you a closer look at this award-winning German timepiece. Stunning In-House Beta Movement Beyond its distinctive Bauhaus aesthetic, Nomos is probably best known for using 100% in-house movements in its watches. Currently Nomos offers?seven...
Introducing The Spacecraft By Romain Jerome, Galactic Haute Horology For The Wrist
Romain Jerome isn't a brand you see too often on HODINKEE, but the moment we heard that both Eric Giroud and Jean-Marc Wiederrecht were involved in this project we knew we had to share The Spacecraft. While calling it their first "pilot's watch" might be a bit of a stretch, Romain Jerome has given us good cause here to stop and take a look. The Spacecraft By Romain Jerome Retrograde Hours Indicator The many triangular facets on the PVD-coated titanium case gives the Spacecraft an unabashedly Star Wars feel, and the case geometry is described by Romain Jerome as "trapeze-shaped." On top of t...
Opinion: In Praise Of The Central Minutes Chronograph
Sinn 140A Space Chronograph with SZ-01 movement The new Panerai Luminor Regatta Flyback (PAM00519) released at last months SIHH was one of the shows highlights for me. Whilesome disliked the use of color (I happen to like it) or the large size (its aPanerai, what do you expect?), what most appeals to me about this timepiece is itsuse of a central minutes counter for the chronograph. In fact, this watch isthe latest in a woefully short list of chronographs with this incredibly usefuland underused feature.I was having an online discussion about the central minuteschronograph hand with fellow watch writer?Miguel Seabra, and he called the function, a Columbus Egg. I...
Inside The Manufacture: A Visit To Glashtte Original's Saxony Headquarters
Outside Glashtte Original's Saxon Manufacture A 45-minute drive from Dresden, over snowy hills and through tiny villages, sits Glashtte, the home of German watchmaking. And perched on a quiet street corner, sandwiched between two other well-known Saxon watchmakers, is Glashtte Original. Just a few days ago we went inside the brand's modern glass and steel headquarters (a stark contrast to the colorful stucco cottages surrounding it) and today we bring you an inside look. Pioneering the use of exotic materials in new ways has become standard practice for Richard Mille, including both full sapphire and carbon nanotube cases.?Here we have a new configuration of Richard Mille's extremely successful RM 011 flyback chronograph with components rendered in brown silicon nitride, a material never before used in horology. The basics of this RM 011 are right in line with those of previous renditions - RMAC1 flyback chronograph movement, 60-minute countdown function, large tonneau shape, and variable geometry winding rotor. The real innovation in this edition is the case material, brown silicon nitride. You might not be surprised to learn that silicon nitride comes to Ric...
Historical Perspectives: Just Because: A Tudor Submariner Issued By The French Marine Nationale
Every now and then, a super great watch comes across our desk and we, for no reason at all, feel compelled to show it to you. Today is one of those days.?What you're looking at here is a Marine Nationale (that's French Navy) issued Tudor Submariner.?It comes from the original owner, who wore the watch for years before deciding to sell it.?It is a reference 7016/0 with an issued date of second quarter 1974 and a production date of the late 1960s based upon its 62X,XXX serial number. MN-issued Subs are becoming quite rare and increasingly valuable, especially in excellent condition with decom papers.?The papers with MN watches are ...

Devon Works Tread 2 Reaches Full Maturation
Last year at Basel, we brought you a look at Devon Work's first display prototype of the Tread 2, a more accessible take on their popular Tread 1 timepiece (which I reviewed for you right here). The design lab's Chief Engineer, Jeff Stephenson gave a nice walk through and explained that they still had some tweaking to do before a final spec was released. Those tweaks turned into a full-blown re-design thanks to company founder Scott Devon's fear that the Tread 2 "was in danger of being considered a derivative of the Tread 1." Sounds reasonable enough. Today, they took the lid off of that final spec, here is what you can expect. The production version of the Tread 2 pushes the industrial desig...
It always makes us happy to see really talented people wearing really, really nice watches. And we don't necessarily mean expensive or complicated pieces - just watches that get it done quietly and superbly. Like, for example, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. And today, we spotted none other than Mr. S. Carter - aka Jay-Z - wearing what looks be just that watch in the official video for "Suit & Tie" with Justin Timberlake. The black and white, David Fincher directed video just came out today, and there are several scenes where you can see Jay wearing what is undoubtedly a Reverso. This isn't the first time Jay's been see...
Hands-On: With The Piaget Altiplano Skeleton, Now in Rose Gold
The Altiplano Skeleton from Piaget is one of our (and the collective watch loving community's) favorite high-grade open worked watch.? The classic 38mm size plus the incredible skeleton work on the completely in-house Piaget self-winding movement is simply superb.? While it's been available in white gold for a while, at SIHH last month, we saw it introduced in rose gold with a blackened movement. The thing looks awesome.? Here are pics:...
