Bet you've never seen this before. You're looking at the new Vacheron Constantin Boutique Exclusive Historiques 1921 next to the very watch that inspired it, a piece built for an American collector in 1921 (though the original concept dates to 1919).? These original Vacheron drivers watches are incredibly rare, in fact this model with the crown in the 1 o'clock position was only made in 12 examples.? The first three pieces were sent to the Americas and the very first belonged to "Rev S. Parkes Cadman, a prominent clergyman, newspaper writer and pioneer Christian radio broadcaster of the 1920s and 1930s. He was an early advocate of ecumenism and an outspoken opponent of anti-Semitism and ra...

Over the weekend, we were lucky enough to be the first Americans to see the production Legacy Machine One from MB&F in the metal.? The 44mm round watch with floating balance wheel, vertical power reserve and one hell of a beautifully designed movement does not disappoint at all.? In fact, it surprises and delights by being such a true-breed MB&F three dimensional work of horological art, all the while maintaining a practicality and wearability previously unseen in the horological machine line.?Essentially, the Legacy Machine One is the MB&F to buy for all those collectors who said they'd never buy an MB&F.Above is a high-definition video of MB&F North American president S...

It's been discussed here and elsewhere many times, the controversy surrounding the title of 'first automatic chronograph' can be polarizing, but often comes down to a matter of opinion. While two of the movements involved are most often profiled, the third is relatively unknown to most enthusiasts. The El Primero and the Caliber 11 enjoy a healthy fan base to this day, and deservedly so. But there was a third contender back in 1969, from the other side of the world, it was Seiko's 6139. While Zenith may have announced their achievement first (Jan '69), the group behind the Heuer Caliber 11 seems to have made it to the global market the earliest (Aug '69). In the background of all this noise ...

This week, Hublot revealed the movement that will power their much anticipated Antikythera watch, Caliber 2033-CH01. You're probably pretty familiar with Hublot, but this Antikythera device is another story that begins in the 1st Century with a ship wreck off the coast of Crete. What's an Antikythera device? That's a question no one has been able to answer accurately until the 21st century.?The Antikythera mechanism was first discovered in 1901, but remained largely misunderstood due to the technical limitations of those tasked with researching the find. It wasn't until relatively recently that scientists began to grasp the true complexity of the device. State of the art X-rays revealed a pl...

Tonight in Milan, Panerai will unveil a new watch, the Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days, or the PAM 00422.? The PAM 00422 features the brand's new in-house P. 3001 caliber which has hour, minutes, small seconds at 9 o'clock and what we think is the coolest part about it, a power reserve of three days that is viewable through the case back.? The Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days is sized at 47mm and sits in the Luminor 1950 case with a cusp-shaped carrure, which takes its inspiration from a rare model of the 1940s that represents an intermediate stage in the transformation from the Radiomir to the Luminor case. The PAM 00422 comes on a natural calf leather that has not been treated in any way and this watc...

The man synonymous with the square faced watch from Heuer finally has his own editions to boast with two new Monacos being released this year by TAG. The McQueen Monacos, as you might expect in a watch bearing his name, are each a distinctive blue, and each can only be bought at TAG Heuer boutiques. Just how close are they to the watch he made famous on the set of Le Mans? Both a lot and a little.?The 1133B that Steve wore while filming Le Mans was blue with white sub dials for the chronograph timing. The new McQueen Monacos capture this color scheme quite well, and in addition receive graphic stripes down the center meant to invoke the original Gulf Racer and racing suit that McQueen wore. ...

We've got a new Spidolite, people! Dubbed the Spidolite II, this watch is the follow up to Linde Werdelin's modern cult classic, highly successful Spidolite, introduced a few years back to much fan fare. The Spidolite II takes the existing Spido case, also found in the SpidoSpeed chronograph, and adds a subsidiary seconds dial at 9 o'clock and cool recessed date display at 3 o'clock.? What is most impressive about all of the Spidolite family is the incrediable attention paid to the case construction - a unique three piece cylindrical chamber which safely carries the movement and locks on the sapphire crystal case-back while the skeletonised case part securely surrounds the chamber - and dial ...

Do you know who Ochs & Junior is? You should. Founded by Ludwig Oecshlin and Beat Weinmann, the brand takes the foundation seen in the seminally awesome MIH watch and continues to push the limits of simplified complications.? What do we mean by simplified complications? Well, for example, the brand's new Selene Tinta (which Felix is in the process of reviewing) offers the most accurate moonphase in the entire world - it won't lose a day for 3478.27 years, and it's built on only five components! These five components, to be exact. Also in the Tinta collection is the world's most user-friendly dual-timezone watch and one hell of a beautiful 31 day calendar piece.? Did we mention these piece...

We swung by the new Vacheron Constantin boutique yesterday to photograph a really cool collection of historically important pieces.? These Vacherons are part of the American Heritage Exhibit, a look into connection between American collectors and the oldest continually running watch manufacture on this green earth of ours.? Some of the watches belong to Vacheron, and some are on loan from private collectors, but all are truly superb pieces and worth of your time.?Below are some photos we took of the pieces at the exhibit, with one major exception; a watch we deemed so cool it's worthy of it's own post.? But, in the mean time click through for some closeups of some beautiful old Vacherons.? T...

We're not sure how the watch world missed this official video of MB&F's Legacy Machine One, but it's a really interesting watch and worth the 4 minutes and 45 seconds.? You get to see Mr. Bsser explain the conception and see it in proper working order. So go ahead, watch it!...

Somebody at Apple knows vintage watches. The Mickey Mouse watch, made by more than one semi-prestigious watch manufacture over the years, is a cult classic.? Even some of the hardest hardcore collectors in the world own a Mickey Mouse watch.? So, it's great to see a Mickey Mouse dial on Apple's iPod nano. But, on the other end of the spectrum is Apple's "open-worked" facade. Basically, it's just four gears sitting next to each other in a circle.? Come on Apple, make an effort for us!? Details at Apple.com....

It's Tuesday afternoon and it's cold and grey in NYC. While the new MB&F LM1 is straight dope, Apple gave us an iPhone 4S instead of an iPhone 5, and that kinda sucks.? We bet you feel the same way.? So, to make it all better, we've found one hell of a deal on a vintage watch.?You are looking at a fantastic old Breitling Top-Time with original panda dial and original buckle.? Beyond the classic looks, it's only $1400! How's that for a cheer-me-up?Click here for details of this sale and of course, we have no connection with this seller, nor do we vouch for him. All interested parties must do his/her own diligence. But, if someone ends up with this beauty we'd love to hear about it!...

MB&F's just announced Legacy Machine One is the brand's first round timepiece, taking inspration from the golden age of watchmaking.? Perhaps just as impressive is the fact that is is the first timepiece to bear Kari Voutilainen's name outside of his own.?Here are two short videos of the prototype LM1's taken by US brand President Stephen Hallock at Basel World this year.? Above is the white gold piece, below is the rose.? These will give you a good idea of how these things look in the flesh.?We should have our own live pictures and video next week....

What is this watch? Honestly, nobody seems to know, but it is absolutely awesome looking.? When we were at TAG Heuer Headquarters a few weeks back, we spotted this curious vintage Autavia in a glass case within the company's restoration department.? Something about it seemed strange.? The thing is, we know our vintage Autavias pretty well, especially the automatic guys, and this one just seemed different. So, we asked them to take the watch out for further inspection and photographs (seen here, of course).? When we returned to New York, we reached out to Heuer experts David Chalmers of Calibre 11 and Jeff Stein of On The Dash.?Both David and Jeff knew of the watch, and they also knew that no...

We recently profiled a very special Vulcain Cricket with possible presidential provenance. Today we have a Cricket with a firmer evidence of its past owner: an early 14k yellow gold Cricket from the estate of Bob Keeshan (a.k.a. Captain Kangaroo), which is currently on eBay.Crickets are, of course, much more common to find in gold plated or gold filled variations than solid gold. A rough guess as to age is that this watch is either from the very late 1940s or very early 1950s. The watch comes with documentation from the 2004 sale of Keeshan's estate after he passed away. As an interesting aside, two other watches auctioned at that estate sale were an Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer made by ...

In the watch world, internet marketing and globalised production on a small scale has resulted in a heap of micro-brands. These brands are great because they are nimble and flexible, and can respond to consumer needs or hot trends quickly, in a way that bigger brands often cant. The diversity this creates for lovers of mechanical watches is great, except that many of these micro brands use off the shelf parts and some, how shall we put it, tried and tested design elements. From the brand perspective this makes perfect sense. If youre one dude in a shed you dont want to invest thousands and thousands of your own dollars in a product that no one would want to buy. Thats why we see so many o...

Two watches that were designed for sport, but have since taken on a slightly more refined role - the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo" and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso - are what we'd call "ultra-thin." Though, they are are both relatively large pieces, and have incredible wrist presence. These two pieces also are much more than simply the sum of their parts, and they wear rather similarly. So, how do they differ?Well, the AP is 7mm* thick, while the caliber 2121 is 3.05mm itself (the reference 5402 pictured is 7mm thick while later reference 15202 with a sapphire caseback is 8mm thick). Of course, it is automatic. The new Reverso Ultra-Thin is 7.2mm thick, while the JLC caliber 822 is ...

Bremont showed us their marine chronometer, the B1 Marine Clock last year around this time.? But, in Monaco last week, they showed a unique Marine clock that, on top of featuring improved specs like a water-tight case and simpler setting options, was actually hand-painted by Ronnie Wood.? Yup, the same Ronnie Wood that started his career with the Byrds Birds and ended up playing with the Stones.?But, having Wood paint this clock isn't as random as one may assume - Wood is actually a fairly accomplished artist and even trained at Ealing Art College.? No word on pricing or availability, but interesting none the less.(Images & Story via In2Watches)...
